Something cute I just found in the Star Wars Storyboards: The Prequel Trilogy regarding Anakin & Padmé and I wanted to share it!

In the concept art and storyboard for AOTC, Anidala have a parallel scene to Luke and Leia in ANH where they use a cable to swing past one platform to the other, and I can’t help but feel GL added this in the storyboarding process as an intended parallel and easter egg between the parents and their kids! And I really wished they had kept it in the final product of the movie!

{Peak Padmé holding onto her man classical ‘hero x heroine style’ as he uses the cable to descend them both safely to the ground 🥹🫶🏾 they invented romance.)

I can just envision it now, Anakin telling Padmé “hold on tightly to me. *bedroom eyes*…” as he’s getting ready to swing them down the chasm and Padmé just blushing up a storm 🤣

EDIT: This scene was even filmed but wasn’t included ultimately, and from what the crew members say, it was a quite ‘charming’ moment between the couple. here’s what they had to say on it;

Ben Burtt: "We had at one time, a scene where [Anakin] and Padmé fire a wire across an abyss and swing across together. It very much recalls the fun of the first Star Wars, and they were quite charming in this scene, because she had to hang on to him, and he had trouble getting the cable across; it kind of bounces off the first time and he has to reel it in and shoot it a second time and she's like 'Jedi, huh?'" [P/A's arrival on Geonosis. Note: he does say 'OW and Padmé' in the commentary, but given the context, and the storyboarding for this scene to back it up, it's quite obvious that Burtt had a slip of the tongue.]

Lucas: "That's really the moment where the, I think, the pathos of him getting stuck in that suit is real - because if he had to do it over, he probably wouldn't do it. But he can't stop it now. He can kind of see the rest of the movie, not in terms of him being defeated by Obi-Wan, but in terms of him going down a path that Padmé can't follow and the consequences that's going to have, and the fact that he's going to have to battle Obi-Wan. He knows that at that point this is all going to end up with a fight between him and Obi-Wan. He knows that Padmé may not buy into this new reality, that eventually she's sort of going to find out the truth: he made a pact with the devil and now he's become the devil. But it's not a joyful thing for him, it's a sad thing. The thing that she says at the very end is 'I know there's still good in him,' and that Luke says later on in Return of the Jedi, is 'there's still good in you,' that's sort of a recurring - because there is, that's the one thing that will bring balance back to the Force, is there's this little ounce of good in him, and it's his son that makes him realize that he made the wrong decision and that the time for rationalization is over and he needs to do the right thing, which is to get rid of the Sith and bring balance to the Force." [Vader's remorse/Padmé's departure] - George Lucas in Revenge of The Sith DVD commentary

In case there’s any confusion on the ‘Padmé/Luke parallels.’ Yes, George intended those as well. Also note that Lucas confirms if Anakin had the choice to go and retrace his steps, he wouldn’t do it all again. Meaning the semblance of goodness in Anakin that both his beloved wife and son saw, is very real and tangible. Because even Anakin himself never agrees with his decisions and actions, he was just desperate and fearful and that tragically led him down the wrong path with traps him in a cycle.

Lucas: "I needed something that - sort of remind people of the real issue here is trying to save Padmé, and that that's what his conflict is, and that's why he's emotionally going back and forth, and it's very easy to have the audience believe that Anakin is miffed because he doesn't get to go on the mission, that he's angry because he's not a Master, and this scene is really designed to remind you that his real problem is that he just doesn't want to lose her and he knows that if the Emperor is killed, then any chance he has of saving her is going to be gone, that the Emperor is his only hope to saving her, which obviously drives him back to the Emperor's office." [Anakin's fatal decision] - George Lucas in Revenge of The Sith DVD commentary

For the people who think the reason behind Anakin’s emotional turmoil is because he’s a “whiny child who didn’t get his rank of Master.” That’s not why. The whole time the reason behind his distress and frustration throughout the movie is how he’s going to save the one love of his life, and George wanted people to know that.

Anakin laughed ruefully, and for the first time, Sabé saw shadows in his face of the little boy he had been. He was quite good-looking, now that he was grown-up. “I know we’ll never be friends, exactly,” he continued. “But we both care about her a lot. You risked your life for her more than once, and you’d do it again. You protect her differently than I would, and in ways that I can’t. Could we at least declare a truce?” And he was charming, too. There was an odd sincerity to him that Sabé knew right away was the real reason Padmé had fallen for him. Whatever else you could say about Anakin Skywalker, he might just be the most genuine man in the whole galaxy. “Truce,” she said. “And thank you for protecting her when I can’t.” “It’s what I signed up for,” Anakin said.

🌈☔️⛅️: Friendly reminder that contrary to the popular fandom belief, Sabé doesn’t actually hate Anakin and she understands why Padmé fell so in love with him.

regarding your last repost … kinda hot how it’s Padmé the one to bring marriage up “ Jedi aren’t allowed to marry” … she said I want the WHOLE thing!

Ommgggg you’re so right!! I didn’t even pick up on that tiny yet very important detail! I mean we already knew this but this just further proves that Padmé wasn’t over here just wanting only a “boyfriend-girlfriend” or “friends with benefits” sort of relationship with Anakin. That girl was out here dreaming up a whole 400k word, slow burn fic with a fantasy-fairytale ending with this man.

currently thinking about the fireside scene from the AOTC script

INT. NABOO LAKE RETREAT, LODGE, FIREPLACE ALCOVE - TWILIGHT

A fire blazes in the open hearth. PADMÉ is sitting in front of it, gazing at the flames. She looks up as ANAKIN arrives. She makes room for him. Brief pause.

ANAKIN: May I tell you something?

PADMÉ: I don't know.

ANAKIN: Then how can I tell you?

PADMÉ: Maybe you should use your Jedi intuition.

ANAKIN: It doesn't work around you. My mind is always a muddle... I can only think of you.

PADMÉ: Anakin, don't...

ANAKIN: From the moment I met you, all those years ago, a day hasn't gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm close to you again, I'm in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you makes my stomach turn over - my mouth goes dry. I feel dizzy. I can't breathe. I'm haunted by the kiss you should never have given me. My heart is beating, hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me. What can I do? I will do anything you ask...

Silence. The logs flame in the hearth.

ANAKIN:(continuing)If you are suffering as much as I am, tell me.

PADMÉ: ...I can't. We can't. It's just not possible.

ANAKIN: Anything's possible. Padmé, please listen...

PADMÉ: You listen. We live in a real world. Come back to it. You're studying to become a Jedi Knight. I'm a Senator. If you follow your thoughts through to conclusion, they will take us to a place we cannot go... regardless of the way we feel about each other.

ANAKIN: Then you do feel something! There's an extraordinary connection between us. You can't deny that.

PADMÉ: Annie, it doesn't make any difference. Jedi aren't allowed to marry. You swore an oath, remember? You'd be expelled from the Order. I will not let you give up your responsibilities... your future, for me.

ANAKIN: I was destined to be a Jedi. I don't think I could be anything else. But you are asking me to be rational. That is something I know I cannot do. I wish I could wish my feelings away... but I can't.

PADMÉ: I am not going to give into this. I'm not going to throw my life away. I have more important things to do than fall in love.

There is silence as they stare at the fire. ANAKIN is thinking.

ANAKIN: It wouldn't have to be that way... we could keep it a secret.

PADMÉ: Then we'd be living a lie - one we couldn't keep even if we wanted to. My sister saw it. So did my mother. I couldn't do that. Could you, Anakin? Could you live like that?

Silence for a moment.

ANAKIN: ...No, you're right. It would destroy us.

Notice how when the question of whether or not this would put Anakin’s Jedi career in jeopardy, Anakin’s response is that he can’t think rationally and that he wish he could wish his feelings away but he can’t, and the thought of not being with Padmé makes him go physically and mentally insane. He’s basically agreed to tossing aside his duty to the Jedi because of his devotion to her but when Padmé mentions that she has “more important things to do than fall in love.” Anakin’s response isn’t to tell her to also throw away her life’s career and passion, encouraging her to give into her feelings more and choose him, instead he offers her another way where she doesn’t have to make a sacrifice and still give into her feelings by keeping their love a secret.

I just think it’s sweet how Anakin is so respectful and supportive of Padmé’s goals, aspirations, and career that he doesn’t even entertain the idea of asking her to leave all that for him but thinks of an alternative way they can still be together without it affecting her career life. It’s the same way Padmé doesn’t want to Anakin to throw away his life’s hard work and dedication, passion just for her. They both love each other immensely but they don’t want the other to make a huge sacrifice for each other. Their love is selfless and runs so deep. ♥️

The Clone Wars Season 1 companion webcomics #4 - Agenda

Another sweet comic strip moment that’s technically in the canon timeline of TCW. Padmé is watching her holopad for any sort of news of Anakin who is on the ‘Malevolence mission’ and C3PO tries to ease her worry over him by telling her that R2 is watching over Anakin. Cue Jar Jar coming in with multiple Traffic Reports from the Outer Rim to help soothe Padmé’s worries 😭 (the way they all look out for her.) This little comic implies that Padmé ended up on the Malevolence mission as well in 1.04 of TCW because she wanted to help Anakin.

(Story by Pablo Hidalgo, Art by Katie Cook, Letters by Grant Gould) This short comic story is set just before 1.04 Destroy Malevolence.

Tender Anidala moments in a mini comic strip in the Clone Wars Magazine Comics #6.45

Love how Padmé reminds Anakin why they’re fighting so hard and what they’re fighting for, and that even though it’s their duty, it’s important to remember it’s also for their future. Then Anakin himself reiterates what she says and wishes the war could stop for them and that’s why they have to win it 🥹 (also Anakin being fully supportive husband mode and having confidence in Padmé’s abilities to handle the diplomats and the droids.)
