🏳️⚧️trans rights will always be human rights. trans women are women, trans men are men, and fuck the idea of binary biological sex.🏳️⚧️
the Supreme Court ruling was directly funded and made possible by JKR’s fortune and legacy. just a reminder to please make sure that her franchise and commercial brand doesn’t get a single penny of your money. (I’m really hoping the new series does badly and gets cancelled. please don’t engage with it. if im honest, I’m glad fantastic beasts already was. screw Warner Brothers and HBO Max for enabling her).
the government excluded trans people from even speaking in the process. now, trans women are excluded from “single sex” spaces, equal pay claims, opportunities, and representations for women. instead, they used “evidence” from clearly anti-trans groups without testing it, while evidence for trans rights is deliberately excluded (eg., the cass review).
we’re entering a time of multiple human rights catastrophes across the world and JKR has now (and, since her first tweet on the topic) solidified her legacy as one of the elites using their power to push for the extermination of trans people.
there are others more articulate than me in dissecting what she did and its implications. I don’t want to inadvertently contribute to the narrative already being spun that it’s “not so bad” by being inaccurate in my understanding of the legal implications — because it certainly is bad and takes trans rights back decades. it’s undeniable a move of bigoted hate that has nothing to do with their “common sense”.
fuck jkr. fuck what she says about trans and ace people.
I think fandom has (often despite best intentions) contributed to her name still being attached to positive things when her legacy is of hate, and created renewed social media interest that’s contributed to her “prospects”. at the same time, I think fandom is also a space of resistance and a way to rewrite the narrative. in an ideal world, a morally perfect one, we would all immediately go quiet and collapse her franchise in a moment. but I think it is more nuanced than that.
the most important thing is to go out into the world — if it’s safe for you to do so — and stand up against what she’s doing (and has contributed to, for several years, in several different countries). I do think we should consider how we can make sure fandom doesn’t contribute to her. but for now, please get involved in supporting your trans and queer friends and engaging with current politics and petitions.
[I haven’t tagged this more widely. it’s mostly for my community as I don’t want to clog up the other tags. I also know this is not a UK-specific issue and has been ongoing for years. but this is such a brazen example of her influence that, as someone who lives in the UK, I wanted to give an update, because boycotting does work and not giving your money is a basic but established form of protest]
