When I was reading tcf for the first time I had the question "Why is cale oblivious to his own actions destroying his slacker dream? Why does this man turn the world upside down and still thinks he might be unknown at the end of the day? ?" In my mind all the time..
So, I decided to analyse his actions in his own perspective!
What did Kim Rok Soo do that was so different from Cale? Nothing really, in both lives he's doing the same exact thing :
โข Fighting the evil beings with overwhelming advantage (as much as he could).
โข Scamming the bad guys in whatever way he does it.
โข Preparing several plans for most possible situations before stepping in.
โขEncourages and helps his people to become stronger and uses their abilities in the most efficient way helping them 'stand out more than him' as he thinks.
โข Has no problem in retreating if the situation is not going as intended, prioritise his people's wellbeing above all else!
โข Works from the rear as a strategist, but is always ready to step in whenever the situation goes south to flip the tables; not just turn them.
But here's the one most important difference between now and then: Cale is not affected by the White Star's curse anymore! Since it broke the moment he transmigrated into Cale's body nothing now is hiding his achievements from the world.
However, as a victim of both WS's reincarnation and og Cale's transmigration, (the curse's cause and its breaker) he had no idea, until recently, so this is the thing Cale does not understand the most. He may have figured out the concept of what effected him but he's yet to link his past to his present comparing them to the point he believes this is an important factor of why he's becoming a worlds wide hero.
So when he says 'i just wanted to be a small hero why isn't it working like it always has?!' he actually means it and is genuinely confused! (And certainly justified) Because why ,if he does almost the same strategy, is he's having different results this time!?
The variables become clearer if you have an outsider pov, for example: krs's curse made it that he can't cherish anything or be cherished, that's why all the people he cared about left him one way or another, This explains why Cale can't understand why his family care for him. Something inside of him thinks unconsciously "How are they still here?". It's not that he's in denial, it's rather that he has never been given the chance to process this love and care in his 40 years of life, for as soon as he starts to accept that he may have a chance of happiness, it's immediately stolen from him, leaving him more traumatized than before...
Another side would be that every time a chance arised for him to standout in public, like the speech thing he talked about, "something" would happen; a monster outbreak, an accident, or maybe an unexpected attack from some evil ability users...
Which means it's not only his desire to stay hidden that has been keeping his achievements in the dark as krs, it was mostly his curse and when he couldn't be praised he thought 'Well, who wants public recognition anyway?'
You can see he was well-known inside his feild, the government, guilds and throughout the company, He was almost an idol to the people in the brain team! But that's where it stopped, always.
So, it's totally understandable how Cale gets confused everytime he does something good and is praised and cheered for by the citizens; what he had learnt from YEARS of experience is that whatever he did, in the end it remained between these companies walls. [It mostly won't go further unless someone is digging around, like the assassins and illegal guilds that hated him]
No matter what good deeds he does, he can't be 'loved', for he is cursed to be left alone. I mean, we still barely know ANYTHING about team leader krs,his abilities, exact strategies, his team and their relationship with each other what other hardships did he face?
The speech curse is one thing we figured just recently and it never crossed my mind before that he could have been in such a situation...
Maybe he never bought a better house because each time he tried it would get destroyed because he "can't have anything to cherish" so he had to be stuck with the wrecked place that triggered his records and brought him more pain and suffering...?
Back to the point, krs was free to do much more without standing out, he didn't have these "fame/heroic consequences" as for he thought this was the norm for him at least, and tbf that's a major one less headache for him to deal with since he had enough enemies already. And he's a shy little boy but we don't talk about that !
And one little thing to note, he's used to trouble coming after him, and he has this sense of responsibility that he should be the one dealing with all of the trouble since most of the time he concluded that he was the reason everyone around him got hurt...and he can't forget so that's two reasons why he's now dealing with all these problems even if his actions now have such consequences or if it brings him more trouble.
Drawing him is my favorite past time ๐ฅ๐ฃ
THE CAKE WAS TRUE
LCF pt. 1 spoilers - im obsessing over it again when its been years now since I've read it..
โ I need him to throw the biggest, sweatiest, most visceral and emotionally ugly tantrum there is over his misfortunate early life all over again
โ And by tantrum, I mean TANTRUM. Selfishly and outwardly destructive to his best (physically weak) ability. Done by himself, f o r himself.
Like imagine, Cale one day while sitting in the shade outside, resting while the kids are playing somewhere near within his sights, but he's just zoning out kinda half paying attention, half watching how the kids and maybe like one of the guardian babysitter characters like Hilsman, Lark, or Choi Han or literally anyone else - Cale's just absent mindedly just < observing > how they play
In the middle of writing my fic and just, I'm so baffled by the intricacy of this novel. All my respect to the author at just how detailed, ironic and yet deeply tragic KRS's very existence is.
Everyone that KRS has ever dared to love ended up dead or a fate worse than death. We have implicit confirmation that he began distancing himself from his team after LSH & CJS deaths. But I keep thinking back to him throughout the years (a little kid, teenage, young adult etc.) always grieving then daring to be happy only to have it shot down over and over again.
His parents passed away? His uncle takes him, only to abuse him.
He ends up at an orphanage? Sure he doesn't have friends but he's earning money and will go to college. Cataclysm happens.
He's stuck under debris for ages. But then he meets our movie star LSH, right? Wrong, LSH goes off to save other people, KRS gets bullied by PJT, the shelters collapse and he loses everyone. It's just this never ending cycle of tragedy over and over again.
At some point, during the early chapters, KRS commends Raon for not giving up despite all his pain. KRS lowkey detests himself having given up early on living a happy life. Still his heart wavers and yearns for companionship simply because that's a fundamental part of being human.
Every single time, he has to gather the courage to be hurt again. I'm thinking now, forget his OG world, in his current one too-- whenever KRS!Cale brings in another person into his family, he's subconsciously bracing himself to lose them. It's ironic that he thinks he stopped fighting back fate, when in reality, all his meticulous preparations, his scheming and his self-sabotage of his slacker life-- are all proof that KRS is not willing to lose these people. The OG!Cale's future is KRS's worst nightmare.
Every single time he brings another member into his family, KRS is silently saying-- I know this opens me up to hurt, for I've lost more people than I've ever had, but still regardless, I want you. I love you. I care for you.
All of this, in retrospect to the reveal about the WS' influence on KRS' life, makes this so much more tragic. The WS looked down on the importance human connection/companionship, considering it useless to the path of godhood. KRS embodies that importance, despite steeling his heart, he continues to care. He's our snarky self-sacrificial middle-aged twink, who finally gained a family willing to literally fistfight god for him. And you know, you know that if the WS stupid curse didn't parasite onto KRS's life, then you know from the Sealed God Test that he'd have had that family too in another life, in another world.
Just going on this rant gives me the heebie jeebies about writing my fic, purely because I keep wondering about how the hell I am ever going to give this man justice with my amateur writing. Sir, respectfully, I know you hate this question but, are you human?
Although Chester's admiration towards his future ruler is adorable he's not even close to the biggest canonical Alberu simp (just like the other canonical fans)
Many readers simp for Alberu. There's a lot of relatable things about him from the way he acts to all he went through, the way he reacts to things and how he overcomes obstacles his way.
The thing everyone can agree upon though is him looking absolute majestic in ALL situations.
Prince persona? His shining highness.
Overworked prince with giant eyebags, messed up hair and headaches? Still absolutely stunning squirrel prince.
Quarter dark elf Alberu? ASDFHJFHJ (no more comment needed)
Almost beaten to a pulp Alberu? Roses bloom around him when he smiles, even when that's accompanied by manical cackling-
Dark Tiger Alberu??? Still majestic at every turn.
Canonically speaking Eruhaben is the most beautiful since he's an ancient dragon... But Alberu is sure described to be pretty at almost every opportunity.
described to be pretty
Who is giving the description?
It's Cale
It's Cale pov and to him Alberu is like a manhwa prince with no unflattering panels.
We see him as so beautiful too (not just because of his fine soul but) because Cale does so
Cale, who's surrounded by whales, elfs, dark elves and dragons sees him like that so the biggest Alberu simp has been him all along
He's so nonchalant about it and I think that just proves it even more โโ (โ ย โ หโ _โ หโ )โ โ
Theyre so similar in how they think too, their styles of leadership, the schemes n scams. Its just Cale has more freedom of movement to go as ballistic as he does w his achievements, but both Cale n Alberu successfully pull off tons of impressive stunts despite the differences in their positions.
Cale w all he does throughout the story, and Alberu w the support (money, communications, other), clean up (that Cale leaves for him), or his own achievements when he's able to go on the field (meetings, lion, gun) (and other things too ofc lmao)
โ I wonder if Cale did like Alberu as a character in a story before he transmigrated, if he saw Alberu like a ใ role model ใ for an effective leader.
Because Cale, having as choppy n unfortunate of a childhood (and frankly entire life) before transmigration, its not like he could exactly observe those healthy n great examples up close,, at least of the type of leader he later becomes*** And it's not like he was bestowed the strategies of how to be a great leader as he suddenly became one. That takes time and skill. And those types of skills often develop more efficiently/effectively if there's good examples observable around them.
โ And who could he observe - specifically of the style of leadership he develops for himself? The very man who, in the earlier chapters of p 1 of LCF Cale himself describes as being awfully similar to himself n how they both handle using people delegating responsibilities. Alberu. The prince whos very good at keeping strong n skilled people within his reach so he can use them for the betterment of the nation he rules.
It wouldn't be a stretch to say Cale probbaly DID appreciate - if not look up to - Alberu when he read the original story n how Alberu could naturally use Choi Han, Rosalyn, and Lark - the og crew + potentially all the other parties that eventually get involved w the Roan Kingdom in any way.
As much as Alberu depends on Cale to run his course n get gains for the Roan Kingdom/take care of their enemies, Cale also depends on Alberu to make many of his schemes work and tie up any loose ends (assigned clean up crew o7) - esp if Cale works for benefits involving the kingdom (he's making sure he gets paid properly for his work, and more lmao)
They are so similar if annoys the both of them. They know how to handle the other and they know they're the same brains of the any operation, which makes is super easy for Cale to dump the clean up responsibilities (or any other responsibility he doesn't gain much to do/is too much a hassle) onto Alberu + trust its no longer his problem (because if its still a problem, Cale is proven to continue til for sure it isn't. He's thorough to a fault.)
Same for Alberu, seeing Cale being reckless yet dependable n trusting him even to a blind-faith degree (giving him the golden token allowing Cale to freely use the Kingdom's. Treasury. T w i c e. <- after the plaza terrorist attack early story pt 1) when he hasn't known this Cale Henituse guy for more than a week at most---
All Alberu knew at that time was that Cale was as much a schemer as he was. Like??? He saw how Cale acted in their first meeting and the both of them instantly clocked how annoyingly similar they were LMAO
Thats why they're so sibling coded imo, I love their dynamic. Literally partners in crime. A begrudgingly efficient duo at work - they can only sigh, but they can't deny their absolute efficiency when working together.
