Snow fell rather heavily outside as you and Johnny sat in the car just outside his childhood home. It had been what had felt like years since he'd been back here - in reality, it probably had been - yet there was something so strange and different about returning this time.
Usually when Johnny came home for whatever reason, he'd always felt that twang of excitement jumping about inside him. Tonight however, he felt nervous, scared even - he just couldn't place his finger on what it could have been.
"Johnny? are you not going inside?" You'd sit in the passenger seat of the car, blanket draped lazily over your shoulder from the drive over from the airport, hair slightly messy from the power nap you'd taken on the road.
Johnny would inhale slowly and rather deeply, his hands gripping the steering wheel. The engine and the headlights had already been turned off for a good three minutes now, and the only light illuminating his facial expressions was the streetlight infront of the car.
"___ I," he'd begin to mumble, his right hand moving to the back of his neck as he did "I hate to admit this but I'm kinda nervous"
"nervous?" you'd echo your boyfriend, eyebrows furrowing together in slight confusion, the blanket slowly slipping from your shoulders as you sat more alertly in your seat "what's there to be nervous about? they're your parents"
He'd laugh awkwardly, probably from slight embarrassment as he thought over what you'd said: you were right, they were his parents, what could he possibly have to worry about?
The truth was, this was the first time you'd be meeting them in person; due to the pandemic and having to live in Korea, the only way you could've met his parents this far into the relationship was through frequent skype meetings. Johnny was just scared they wouldn't like you as much in person.
It wasn't anything about you that made him think this, it was just something he'd seen so many times in films and dramas that it'd stuck in his head, and had proven a rather difficult thought to dismiss.
"okay... let's do this" Johnny uttered, taking the keys from the ignition and clutching them tightly in the palm of his hand. With only a short amount of time, he'd have readied the suitcases outside the front door, lining them behind the two of you as you stood in the snow smiling softly at each other.
With a ring of the doorbell and a few deep breaths, it was his mother who eventually answered the door, letting out a wave of warm air and Christmas party music as she did. Choruses of "oh my goodness, Johnny's here!" and "what are you doing here? you should be at home" were soon to follow the burst of hugs she gave. Taking her hands in his is when Johnny says.
"hey, i said I'd be home for Christmas"
The night from there only consisted of laughter and warmth; something Johnny had missed about his parents house for a while now. Here, as he watched his mother teach you how to properly baste a turkey, he knew that he didn't have anything to worry about at all.
