vincent benitez smiling benevolently at tedesco during a public argument and then scolding him in spanish at night and reminding teddy of his place. is this anything

After a second, Tedesco's mouth shuts and Aldo, still leaning down in confusion, turns his head towards the back of the church. Tedesco's eyes follow. The sun shimmers around them in a soft golden glow, rays striking through the windows to hit the white cloth on the altar and soak into the black of their clothing. Tedesco's shoulders take most of it, his head turned away from the sun, while Aldo accepts a direct hit to the face that leaves him bright and cheery in the daylight. They stare at him together-Aldo, luckily, in delight, Tedesco in utter misery.
Thinking about how Tedesco—obviously—having internalized homophobia and Complicated Feelings towards his opinion of Benítez, would almost get angry that he’s not.. How Tedesco imagines him?
Ok, in the way that; Tedesco almost wants and expects for his kindness and soft spoken-ness to be a facade. He thinks, not infrequently, about what it would take to push Benítez to the point where his facade cracks. He wants Vincent to turn out to be as much of a fraud as Tedesco feels /he himself/ is. He wants everyone to see it happen while he smiles defiantly, kind of like a “A-ha, he fooled you all but not me!”
Not to say Benítez isn’t incapable of being unkind and giving a firm hand to those who deserve it—I’m not going to downplay the guarded nature he inevitably has from being a product of his environment (yet, unlike Tedesco, he doesn’t let it fester or control him). But he’s not /cruel/ like Tedesco /wishes/ he was.
It would be so much easier to be okay with the fondness that starts to grow for Benítez if he were mean in secret—or at the very least, horrible and human to/around Tedesco.
I think it creates some very unhealthy air between the two, and mainly on Tedesco’s side—who is constantly pushing and pulling to get that mean side he “knows” is there.
Some kind of fucked up “everything he’s doing is to manipulate everyone into further thinking he’s a good person and a good fit for the pontificate, but it’s all selfish and for himself” mentality (Tedesco is delusional)
