When Alfred Molina auditioned for Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg said to him as he was leaving: "'Oh, Alfred, you don't have a thing about spiders, do you?'"

Speaking about making the film a few years later, he remembered: "The tarantula thing - that was the first day, and this man arrived with a big suitcase, and inside were all these different compartments with what looked like a tuft of straw in each one.

"Underneath each tuft of straw was a tarantula! So anyway, this guy's putting these spiders on me, and these spiders are more scared than I am, and he's kind of keeping up this running commentary about the spiders - 'You know, it's very hard to train tarantulas.'"

Molina thinks there were at least a couple of dozen spiders on him for the scene. "[But] they're not moving. And I hear Steven say something like, 'Why aren't they moving? They look fake.'

"And the guy, the spider wrangler, says, 'Oh, well, because they're all males. You see, we have to put a female in there, then they'll fight!"

Okay, put a female in there, says Spielberg. "And he gets a female, and he puts the female somewhere on my chest. And suddenly, oh, all hell breaks loose! These spiders, they're running and they're dropping, and they're kind of fighting, and they're running over my face and up [my back], and as this was happening Steven was going, 'SHOOT! SHOOT! SHOOT!'"

Spielberg yelled, "'Alfred, look scared!'" to which Molina's genuine panicked response was: "I am scared, I AM!"
