I was born and raised in Gaza, a place that has always been my home 🏡. I grew up surrounded by my family, my friends, and the streets that I knew like the back of my hand. Life wasn’t always easy, but we had love, laughter, and dreams. I used to think that no matter what happened, home would always be here. But life has a way of changing things in ways we never expect.

bill writes a character in his books. writes a man who loves birds and hates when things are left unorganized and prays in hebrew. he doesn’t know where he gets the inspiration from, but he knows that this man is so very real to him. and then mike calls them back to derry and he remembers, he remembers being thirteen and being at the quarry with stan and having sleep overs at stan’s house and getting stan a hanukkah present (”bill you can just call it a christmas present, the holiday can be practiced in a secular way–” “sh-shut up, it’s a hanukkah present because it’s f-for you”). remembers being sixteen and fooling around with stan, remembers the way stan’s heart would race under his hand, remembers the way that stan’s lips felt on his. and then, within the hour, stan is dead, and as much as bill loves audra, he can’t explain to her why he comes home heartbroken. why he keeps stan’s letter on his bedside table. bill considers killing that character, too, but he decides against it. instead, that man gets to grow old on park benches and in temples with stained glass windows. that man gets what stan should’ve gotten, the kind of life bill used to sketch on the rocks at the quarry when they’d lay there together and sunbathe. and bill’s last book is dedicated to all of the losers, but there’s a line in there for stan, because of course there is: for the boy who loved the birds.
