Hey everyone!
I know it’s been a minute, but with the recent news that Automattic has laid off a portion of its workforce (including a sizable percent of tumblr's staff), it's a good time to have a quick chat about the future.
Now, as far as we know, tumblr isn't going anywhere just yet. No need to panic! However, I do recommend that you take into consideration a few things.
1: Backup your tumblr! Here's tumblr's official guide to doing so. It's always a good idea to have backups of your data and now is a great time to do so.
*I’ll also be including a handful of other links walking you guys through other backup methods at the end of this post. As I understand it, each of them have different pros and cons, and it might be a good idea to have more than one type of backup depending on what you want to save/how you’d like the backup to look/etc.
2: Have some place your mutuals/friends can find you! A carrd or linktree is a great way to list off anywhere you might find yourself on the internet.
3: Once again, don't panic! We don’t know that anything is happening to tumblr anytime soon—it just doesn’t hurt to have a backup. Better to have a plan now instead of being blindsided later.
*The other backup methods I’ve been able to find:
—First off, someone put together a document with several backup methods & pros and cons for each. (I believe it originated from a tumblr post, but with search being the way it is I haven’t been able to track it down.) This goes over a lot, but I’m adding a few more links to this post in case they might be helpful too.
—This post and this video were a good guide to the older “bbolli tumblr-utils backup for beginners” method mentioned in the doc (I used them during the ban in 2018 to make sure I had my main blog saved).

No but like, this is the thing about Sam carrying Frodo and the ring up the mountain. It's a cool scene in the movie, but they don't explain what's happening at all. The ring at this point is so heavy Frodo can't even lift his head. It's like essentially a cinder-block he has to carry around his neck. And finally he gives up and Sam offers to carry him and:
DO YOU GUYS GET IT? THE RING IS A BURDEN, BUT FRODO ISN'T. FRODO DOESN'T WEIGH ANYTHING TO SAM. SAM CAN LIFT HIM EASILY!!!! HE'S NOT A BURDEN AT ALL I —

The Hall of Prophecy being closed in the very first episode of Calamity is so good to me...just a one off comment, a minor inconvenience. No one really thinks about it. You're regarded as a kind of party trick, supposed to do something entertaining for this grand celebration of the whole city.
You're seeing the Betrayers walk this world in realtime--and so is every other Oracle you know. You've all seen it.
You can't see anything else.
"Two other minor things. We've had to shut down the Hall of Prophecy. So I'm not sure if Guildmaster Nydas had anything planned there, but the Hall of Prophecy is just a little...the Oracles require rest. There were some--issues, with the return to Domunas. I believe they may have just been exhausted. There's been some tremendous output from there recently."
Oh to be a prophet in the halls of Avalir when the Calamity is about to strike, oh to be burdened with a knowledge that will forever echo through the ages, the harbinger of a doomed future that no one would believe. Knowing you could never change the outcome, but hell, all the same you've got to try--
In the light of the staff once again getting de-staffed, I am growing increasingly worried about tumblr. Even though I haven't been here long, I know how everybody loves to joke about a "dead website", but I feel like each new event that threatens us that we brush off grows more and more serious. I'm not naive, I know that unprofitable business is an unprofitable business, that ends in inevitable outcome, that we might have just been putting off.
I have truly grown to love this place - I may not post much, but I come here to relax. I have learned so many interesting things here, discovered so much good content, grown closer with so many communities. This place has given me books and shows and podcasts and sources for hobbies and inspiration for research, and philosophy and rebellion and encouragement and hope. It's an art gallery, a movie theater, a coffee shop, a library, and a public debate club. My blog is my scrapbook diary of all the stuff I enjoy here.
I don't really use any other social media, it's just this strange and wonderful place. I don't want it to go away, not with all its lore and history, not with all its dedicated users.
I truly have no idea where to go from here, because there's nothing like it. But at the same time, I don't see anything that I can do apart from backing up my blog.
Where would you all go? How can I stay in touch if worst comes to worst?
wonderful pair of posts on the dash tonight
SOOOOO funny when you’re having a strong emotion and your logical brain KNOWS you’re overreacting but you literally can’t do anything about it.
Emotional brain: fire and rage and biting and biting and biting
Logical brain: That was an innocent mistake, and not anyone’s fault.
Emotional brain: you’re right… fire and rage and biting biting biting for one thousand years tho
People are like “these animals have exoskeletons and these ones have endoskeletons” but no. It’s all exoskeletons, your exoskeleton is protecting your bone marrow which is where your soul (which is you) is. The rest of the stuff is extraneous decoration that Big Pharma wants you to think is important/
Why do you think there’s so few ghosts around? Why are most ghosts people who died violently? You gotta crack the bones to let the soul out. Most souls are trapped alone in the dark and silent ground (or teaching hospitals) for hundreds or thousands of years until the bones eventually start to break. People who are cremated get their whole soul released and it can reincarnate. But if someone dies violently then maybe only a couple of their bones are cracked and a little scrap of the soul escapes but it’s incomplete and confused. Can’t figure out how to leave, gets obsessed with its own circumstances, repeats actions, CANNOT be reasoned with. PROOF that the soul is in the marrow.
See I know what I’m talking about.
Sin is stored in the teeth btw which is why young children are innocent (they’ll get a do-over with replacement teeth) and the elderly are shameless (once you have no teeth to remember your sins, you have nothing to fear).
Upon review I think that maybe vodka isn’t for me.
