Small warning for a slight rambling below. I haven't fully explored how the twins' auras affect those with nontraditional souls, so this is also a bit of brainstorming on my end. This might change slightly in the future, but these are my initial thoughts as to how it will work.

You can think of Dream and Nightmare's auras as applying a status effect in a limited area. Anyone within this bubble of sphere has the effect applied to them, but the effect changes slightly depending on the permissions the twins have access to.

In Classic's case, the auras manifest as a smell.

For Error, they manifest as physical sensations- almost like prickles on his marrow. They are highly unpleasant to him, so he tends to avoid them. And yes- the Error's glitches are what results in the aura becoming physical.

Any being whose soul is missing or whose soul is corrupted (I'm thinking of Killer here) experiences the auras in a highly muted way. They are able to subconsiously recognize what emotions the auras would normally manifest, but due to their lack of typical emotions, the emotions are not 'forced' on them.

Ink and Killer experience the auras in a similar way. However, the more Ink is off his paints, the more muted the auras become.

This question actually made me laugh because Nightmare distinctly NEVER weakens his aura around anyone. He enjoys watching others squirm, regardless of their allegiance.

However, it is possible to get used to his aura to a degree. Ccino and the Gang have developed this slight 'immunity'/familiarity with Nightmare's aura, so they are not quite as debilitated as others when so close to Nightmare. When Nightmare first brought each member of the Gang into the castle, he pretty much left them to adjust on their own. The Gang actually enjoys going on missions sometimes because it usually gives them an excuse to get out of the castle's atmosphere.

Killer had an easier time than the others, something they hate him for.

In terms of Cross, his soul is corrupted in that it is currently half monster and half human, but it is still complete. Therefore, the only thing that changes for him is that Chara is not exempt from Nightmare's aura.

Conflict? Drama?? BLOODLUST???

But in all seriousness though, I’m really interested to see how you choose to write this! Fresh’s parasitism and use of hosts has always greatly interested me with the drama and conflict it can create just by itself, what with how the hosts still seem to be conscious in the comics where they’re acknowledged and Fresh’s interactions with Error.

Plus, it’s always interesting to see how other characters react to the whole parasite thing and how they may handle that information! Will they avoid Fresh? Try to help the host? Try to help *Fresh* by trying to find a host/soul substitute? Is it common knowledge or more of a secret?? So many possibilities!!!

And then with how Classic has a history with body-snatching, parasitic entities… so interesting!! It’s like seeing an open flame next to a box of dynamite!!

Apologies if this is a bit off topic btw, idk why but like, Fresh is like THE character ever for me and has infected my brain stem at the moment. Kinda got carried away lol

STTMH!Cross's AU is very similar to the animation, but I use a few different mechanics, especially regarding code abilities and souls. After Cross's AU is destroyed, his background varies widely away from canon.

I don't mind giving the following tidbits:

Ink does not possess any part of XGaster's soul. He met XGaster, and did show XGaster the Doodlesphere. After that, Ink occasionally visited, but his visits grew more sparse. Ink didn't necessarily talk to XGaster each time- he only came to visit to see how XGaster's "creation" was going.
No one in Xtale has experience outside of their own universe (until after their universe is destroyed).
One time, after a particularly long absence, Ink returns to Xtale and finds just Cross.
Error also does not take Cross's soul, so Cross has no reason to take Classic's or anyone else's soul. In fact, Cross first met Error after meeting Nightmare.

Other stuff happens (including Nightmare recruiting Cross), but I hope those hints give an idea of what I have in mind! I'll be diving into Cross's background soon, so I'll give more details then.

Because this is exactly how it happened. Dream was talking with someone, and a mischievous child decided to randomly try to bite Dream's outfit. Then Classic actually DID pick them up by the back of the shirt and move them away.

On why he can travel in the first place

Since he is the og au everyone in his au is connected to every single universe, giving him (teleportation) range over them. The reason only he out of everyone in his au can travel them is cuz he is the only one with shortcuts.

Normally regular au’s such as Swap, Fell, Outer, cannot teleport/portal out of their au. Classic’s au is classified as a regular au so he shouldn’t be able to. However due to him being the og and having connections to each au, he has free range, with headaches. The headaches being there as the multiverse thinks that a regular au shouldn’t be able to do it.

The alternative to regular au’s are ones that are meant to multiversal au’s or are broken to the point they can portal/teleport

Multiversal: Dream, Nightmare, Reaper

Broken: Error, maybe Inks?? And Cross? (I think Cross could portal I don’t remember)

I love this idea!!! Classifying universes as regular vs multiversal vs broken is so neat! And now I may use this idea for something...

You're actually pretty close to how Classic's shortcuts actually work as he moves around the multiverse, and as I mentioned before, it will be explored later! I promise everything that happens/mechanics have a reason~

I'm too much of a realist to not give absolutely everything an explanation.

I will be honest: I am 100% terrible at giving recommendations. I find most fics on AO3 by searching for specific tags, and half the time, I forget to bookmark them for later...

Not sure I am confident to give any broad recommendations! There are too many good fics, long and short, all over AO3 in so many different genres.

Edit: As kelseyishere mentioned in the comments, you should definitely check out For the Forgotten Ones by I'm_Sorry_Buddy if you haven't! It's EXTREMELY angsty and has a lot of it gets worse before it gets better. Plus, it's extremely long and features Ink as the main character, and it includes a lot of different viewpoints.

FTFO did give me a lot of courage to start STTMH, as well~

2nd Edit: I cannot believe I forgot about 10 Skeletons With 1000 Years to Go by Birds_And_Words!!! This is a huge favorite of mine that I run to when I see an update. Thank you maybe-in-another-nicer-life for mentioning it!
