not necessarily as a character/person, more so her dynamic; she’s literally an immortal demon that stays young by feeding kids to a GIANT SNAKE in her CUPBOARD and she’s so absolutely over everything

like, come on; if i was around for that long i would be sick of everyone’s shit too

and she got bored so she made it her new hobby to seek out the two ghosts that broke into her house for like ten minutes (they did steal her snake’s dinner tbf but the amount of pettiness she had and the lengths she went through for revenge was so funny)

not to mention her sass is the absolute best thing in all of her scenes; “TEETHFACE what the FUCK :(” “MONTY!! JESUS, i’m trying to— threaten some kids🥰” “who the FUCK are you?!” “some people drink almond milk, some people skip carbs, some people feed their gigantic snake children to stay young and beautiful; it’s honestly NBD<33” “i never thought i’d be eating kids to stay young and beautiful, but, you know; fine print😇” “NO, MY FACE!!!! …is FINE😌” “enough sensitivity training for today🤗”

yes sean baker doesn’t seem like the greatest person ever. but if you see anora as an anti-feminist, pro sex work (as in pro women doing sex work, not pro supporting sex workers) then you are blatantly choosing to ignore the final scene. nothing about anora glamorized sex work or ani’s experience. another critique that i keep seeing is “the ani we see at the beginning wouldnt fall for ivan.” okay first of all y’all can’t handle a three dimensional female character. second of all, is it so hard to believe that a girl who expresses her desires for more would jump at the opportunity to have a whirlwind romance with someone who is presenting everything.

the final scene is a testament to the fact that this is not a glamour story nor is it putting women down. it’s realistic unfortunately. Ivan was a rich pussy and couldn’t stand up to his parents and the repercussions were ani’s to deal with. her encounter with igor at the end was not a disservice to ani’s character. its an attempt at regaining control of her life in the way that she knows. her tears are not only her realizing that her sexuality won’t heal her heart break, but also it’s the first time in the weeks that they are together where she isn’t focused on ivan. she’s taking everything in and realizing how fucked it was. igor was consistently kind to her during that time so it was easy for her to already feel vulnerable around him and eventually break down.

ani is a victim of ivan’s dumbass behavior. but her character is not a victim. she fights until she realizes that she can’t win. and how could she? how is a stripper in brighton beach going to stand to russian oligarchs? it doesn’t make sense for ani and ivan’s romance to have a happy ending, but i believe that ani does have a happy ending. she’s a sweet girl and she’s smart as fuck. she knows how to play the game, she’s not a victim.

(modern) sex work is inherently anti feminist and capitalist because it functions as means to oppress women under the guise of liberation and bodily autonomy. but anora and sean baker recognize this. presumably ani goes back to work at the strip club and ivan goes away forever. it’s over and done with. ani is not liberated through her experience. baker doesn’t try to push that narrative. nor does he try to push the narrative of broken girl. she’s a woman who’s been through an extremely devastating experience and she cries. the only time she does the entire movie. she’s not glamorized or put down.

mikey madison deserved the win, ani deserved the win. sean baker deserved the win for giving mikey the opportunity to tell ani’s story. the story of so many women. the rest of the oscar’s were a shit show though
