I think Sun would have backed up his words/apology with actions in a hypothetical where Nexus had been accepted back into the family. If you ask me, the slip up seems to be a product of Sun yearning for what he and Nexus had back then — when his former brother was Moon. But moving forward (in this hypothetical scenario) he and Nexus would have created their own dynamic separate from Moon, wherein Sun would never call Nexus by his old name again. It's a hypothetical where Nexus truly figures out who he is individually.
Like it or not, as things have stood thus far, everyone considered Nexus a "failed Moon". Himself included among them, by the way! They all had to move past that, but no one could because Nexus wanted to remain hung up on the past instead of figuring himself out in earnest.
Oh I absolutely agree that Sun was not only genuine in the apology and the slip up was through yearning but it’s still abusive like a cycle of ‘abuser: does something that hurt, abuser: apologises and genuinely means it, things get better for a bit but abuser: does the same thing that hurt again. And the cycle goes on, that’s when action and change NEED to Accor for the apology to mean anything. How sorry can you be if there no corse correction?
It’s also this unhealthy rollercoaster of highs and lows, this hope only to be shattered. A pattern that we as a fandom noticed Dark Sun orchestrating to Nexus behind the scenes with the manipulation and stringing along. It only just accord to me that this pattern was so effective agains Nexus because Sun started it.
