On one hand I don't want 9-1-1 to turn into The Buddie Show and it is good and important to keep focus on other characters and relationships; on the other hand 8x11 really did feel like it was setting up for Buddie, but then it's been followed by two episodes of Eddie treating Buck like a partner but nothing particularly non-platonic on his side, followed by this virus 2 parter with no Eddie, followed by possibly dead Bobby in 8x16 which isn't really a moment for romance... 8x11 really felt like there was potential but this big pause kind of saps any momentum there and it's making me question how they could get back to that point

thinking about how Buck has been part of the Diaz family for a long time, just in this nebulous way. a sort of quantum state flickering between friend and uncle and dad as the situation demands. his biggest dad moments tend to be when Eddie is absent either physically or emotionally — the tsunami arc, the shooting, Eddie's breakdown — or when there's a wedge between Eddie and Chris (ubering to the loft after the argument over Eddie dating). it's like for years Buck has been an understudy for the role of Christopher's dad, only stepping in when Eddie can't go on. and now their arc in 8b is very deliberately shifting that dynamic. Buck is the absent one here, he's over 800 miles away from Eddie and Chris. and Eddie is still calling him on. there's no natural disaster and nobody's in the hospital. there's just the long hard everyday work of making a family, and Buck has been there every step of the way. he's not waiting in the wings anymore. he's ready to take on the role for real.

I don't get BuckTommy shippers making such a fuss about how ✧・゚: *✧・゚romantic *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ it is that Tommy claims he was driving by Buck's apartment and thinking of calling him; yet ignoring that he dumped Buck, didn't make any post-breakup contact in the weeks/months since it happened, he's only talking to Buck then because Ravi dragged him over, and he doesn't admit to apparently wanting to reach out to Buck until finds out the competition is out of the way. Why give him credit for gestures of interest he didn't actually make?

Sorry, girl, but you missed out Well, tough luck, that boy's mine now We are more than just good friends This is how the story ends

now that chris is back where he belongs is he going to pipe up in a week like 'dad why are you and buck facetiming ALL THE TIME?'

eddie, baffled: what do you mean? he's my best friend! you're keeping in touch with your friends back in LA, aren't you?

chris: yeah loads but not THIS much

eddie: we... we talk a normal amount

chris: you literally just facetimed with him to tell him about the sandwich you were eating

One thing I would love to see more of in Buddie fic is scenes where they go to their friends for advice and get a response that takes them seriously and is supportive of their concerns about having a relationship rather than blandly encouraging

Like my kingdom for somebody to nod and say "Yes confessing your love to a friend is a big risky move and if it goes wrong it probably will make things weird between you. a kid does add complications to a relationship and future household dynamics even if things are good between you as friends and that's probably something you should be having serious conversations about" instead of always being like "go for it. It'll be fine. Power of friendship and true love will overrule any concerns"

One notable thing about the FaceTime calls is how they demonstrate a complete 180 from Buck and Eddie's dynamic in 8x09 and 8x10, which was awkward, uncomfortable, and even contentious at times. They've both relished the opportunity to fall back into old patterns: using their love for Chris to avoid having to think about how they feel about each other. Like they are THRIVING with their beloved buffer standing between them. It's their comfort zone. A safe way for them to be partners in the way they know they are but aren't ready to to put a name to.

But now that Eddie is no longer in dad crisis mode, the weirdness is bound to creep back in. And what are they going to when there's nothing left to face but each other?

Buck and Eddie sharing a bed this, Buck and Eddie fighting over the couch that, but who will join me on team Buck and Eddie excitedly shopping for bunk beds while their loved ones look on in abject despair at the level of stupid

going crazy over the fact that helena and ramon wanted to take over for eddie, both because they wanted a do-over and because they thought they'd do better than eddie, and then they just made the same fucking mistakes. on their way to unhappy and repressed son no 2. who is doing it like them

Since he has less to fill his time with Eddie gone Buck decides to apply to the calendar again and this time gets picked, and obviously he sends a copy to Eddie to share his achievement with his friend and that's how we get Eddie's gay awakening

(don't ask how this would work with the shows timeline, I don't even know what month they're currently in and I'm not convinced the show does either)

also. helena bringing eddie down for "ending up" an uber driver as if he wasn't a celebrated and decorated firefighter who only had to leave that job because he was desperate to provide for his son who SHE took halfway across the country and away from the vibrant and established life they had built together without an ounce of effort to reunite them

It's what buck deserves ❤️ someone to choose him and go after him and fight for him! Tommy gave up because there was competition? Oh ok. Eddie go get your man, go get your juice joy! It's what eddie deserves too ❤️

YES anon THIS exactly!!! like i super get why people want buck to have the autonomy and choice and have him make the first move but i am on the other side, i need eddie to choose joy and choose buck and come back to buck and continue love him so obviously and loudly and with such tender devotion that buck gets DIZZY and SWOONY about it forever and ever and EVER and eddie coming at him with that pure unadulterated smug aggressive confidence that he brought with him when he went to pick up chris's stuff would send buck into CARDIAC ARREST from the sexiness of it and i need it on my screen or imprinted on my eyeballs immediately
