It means a lot to me that Snape does what he does to undermine Voldemort even while canonically terrified of him.

Snape pales noticeably when he is asked to return to Voldemort. In Occlumency lessons, he gets distinctly uncomfortable at Harry’s slinging his name around like it’s nothing:

β€œDumbledore is an extremely powerful wizard,” Snape muttered. β€œWhile he may feel secure enough to use the name ... the rest of us ...”

His report to Dumbledore of Voldemort’s anger over losing the diary conveys enough of his fear that Dumbledore describes it to Harry as β€œterrible to behold”. He hesitates for the space of a heartbeat before entering the Death Eater meeting in The Dark Lord Ascending. And of course, he pales until his face resembles a β€œdeath mask” as he understands that the borrowed time he has been living on is up. And on each of these occasions, we see him continue his difficult work anyways.

These small moments give us a glimpse of the human under the mask that Snape presents to Voldemort, and help us start to understand the considerable toll that his work must have taken on him.

YES. I don't know why people seem to think the whole process was just about putting up his shields or something mechanical like that. Voldemort tortured a Death Eater for... No reason at all, when he first returned. Snape had sent him to his death, triggered the mechanism that made the killing curse backfire, switched sides, protected Harry in front of him, kept him away from the stone, and tried to get Sirius kissed (while believing Sirius to be on Voldemort's side). The man was walking on a fraying tightrope. It would have been terrible writing to make him particularly zen about it all.

I have a funny headcanon about Snape's role within the DE circle.

Like, yeah he became a spy because he was really good at being stealthy and unremarkable but before that of course Lucius was talking to everybody about his potions skills. The guy was a malnourished greasy 17yo but also a fricking genius.

And ofc he made poisons or other stuff but my hc is that one of the thing he made consistently for the Dark Lordβ„’ was... handcream.

Because of course old Tomy liked to look good and smell good and he had a handcream he used for years then it was discontinued and he was so pissed off (and everyone heard about it) and Severus made him a new one - even better - with the same fragrance and this is how he got noticed by the DL himself.

And when the Dark Lordβ„’ came back... he made it again (and had to adjust the formula because his skin was different now) and it just cracks me up to imagine Dumbledore with a grave voice being like "So, Severus my boy, any news from your last meeting with Voldemort?" and Severus to be like "Lavender is now offensive to him, I need to find an adequate replacement." and Dumbledore being like "...what."

It's funny when I read someone saying that Snape was obsessed with Lily and wouldn't leave her alone... wasn't James exactly like that? he heard a million no's from Lily before she got tired and said yes, he apparently loved her the first second he saw her and everyone calls it love. Now Snape, who was Lily's friend for years, is called a stalker, obsessed, and other names when he says he will always love her...

I'm sure if James wasn't described as handsome people wouldn't ignore that poor Lily had no peace. None of them gave her peace.

And I say this as a fan of the Marauders and Snape's gang. It's kind of tiring, all this hypocrisy.

Snape deserves a world. He deserves to be loved. He deserves to be cherished. He deserves someone who would brush his hair, make him breakfasts because he forgot to eat. To believe in him. Even he makes mistakes. Sometimes he is too cold because he thinks it is better that way. To push away people before it is too late and he is attached.

He is the most beautiful character I ever seen. He is calm outside but inside he is like a tsunami of guilt, anger, unrelieved emotions. He is tired. He deserves someone who will kiss his forehead and remind him to drink his potions. He deserves someone to make silly jokes and make him smile. Who should just be here with him. Just because he is existing. Snape needs to be loved. Even he tries to believe he doesn’t want to be loved.

He doesn’t exist. But he makes me feel alive.

I will be the hands that gather you,

The hands that hold you.

I will be the hands that love,

The hands that accept.

I will be the hands that

Do not betray you"

What Snape's childhood probably looked like

I've read a lot about Snape's childhood growing up in a poor slum town in 60s/70s Britain (this thread has a good discussion on it), but I'm a visual person and nothing quite puts things in perspective like photos and video. I went down a researching rabbit hole tonight while looking for info for a fic I'm working on, and thought I'd share a few things I found. I didn't realize just how bad the poverty was in the UK at that time (Snape was born in 1960 and would have started Hogwarts in 1971), but holy heck do these give perspective on just how destitute his childhood probably was.
