“It’s Dot Com!”

Just a little weirdo with a lot of interests and not a lot of brain cells. 28 years old. Cis lesbian, she/her pronouns.

It probably says something about my mental state that I’m trying to build a small loom out of popsicle sticks at the moment. No idea what but Something.

The spirit of Penelope haunts you. Who or what is your Odysseus?

Stable employment.

I know that realistically you can only fit so many movies into a list of approximately 100, but I cannot take that "How many of tumblr's favorite movies have you seen?" list that's been going around seriously because there are some truly egregious omissions.

Some of it is very clearly recency bias, which makes me wonder if the op truly wasn't on here in 2013 or so, but you're telling me you made a list of "tumblr's favorite movies" that doesn't include Pacific Rim or Mad Max: Fury Road? Because, like, I was there, Gandalf.

I'm a ridiculous human and genuinely couldn't sleep until I tried my hand at a better, more balanced list -- though of course, I have my own biases when it comes to what corners of this website I've lurked in over the years. For what it's worth, I did consult the last several Years In Review, while also drawing on the fact that I've been here for over a decade. But if there's anything that truly doesn't feel like it should have made the cut, blame my mutuals for putting it on my dash all the time.

(And apologies, but I couldn't seem to find Goncharov among the website's listings)

This poll is asking about general walkability, not your personal habits– if there is a supermarket nearby but you do not or cannot personally walk there, vote according to what a hypothetical able-bodied person would be able to do.

Guys I think I have a problem, I can’t stop making monkey’s fists. I’m running out of suitable drawstrings and shoelaces to make them out of.

The mystic allure of making a little ball on the end of a string continues.

The way that Pixar “omitted” the trans storyline in Win or Lose is really funny to me because. It’s still there. They took out any explicit mention of the word, but it’s there. It’s not even subtext, it’s as blatant as visual language can get without putting the character in a trans flag shirt like that one guy in the Baymax show. But I guess if you’re really not paying attention you can just interpret it as Kai’s dad coming to terms with his daughter wanting to play softball instead of baseball. I guess?

I spend a lot of my time worrying about real things that affect my life but it’s also important to note that I worry that I didn’t understand Plato’s Allegory of the Cave from the one time I read it in college and that if I reference it in my art people will point and laugh at me and say “this dumbass doesn’t even understand the framework of an ethics system centered on truth as the greatest virtue” and I will be cast out from society.

I was watching a video essay where the topic of AI came up, and the argument they were making was that our idea of what consciousness is is too human-centric to really be sure that an LLM doesn’t have its own consciousness. Which is interesting on a philosophical level, but isn’t insisting that because the machine operates similarly to we do it must be conscious also anthropomorphizing the technology? Maybe it’s just me being a Luddite but something about it really rubbed me the wrong way.
