Ramblings of The Evil Nae

@theevilnae / theevilnae.tumblr.com

The Evil Nae; artist of The Fantasy Book Club comic on webtoon, illustrator, book worm, unrelenting cartoon enthusiast, asexual, polyamorous and annoyed. Not all of these traits are inherently evil but believe me, they can be.

The Fantasy Book Club

Gods and monsters, dragons and magic… It’s just fiction, right? Antisocial student librarian Fiona isn’t convinced that’s true. Turns out, belief in magic is all it takes to make you a target, but believing in others is the only way to survive.

My supernatural drama webcomic features LGBT+ books nerds in peril, monsters, magic, and one very grumpy librarian turned dragon-girl. Over 100 episodes and going weekly episodes for over 3 years!

Praying to God never made me a girl. It just served as a sign that I had been a girl all along.

Happy Moth Monday, everyone!

I Quit My Job

Just a little update on my day job situation... in that I no longer had one. Had to break the news to my editor and creative team, also known as me. They were nervous at first.

In all seriousness though, public servants are having a terrible time right now. The vibes are absolutely rancid. I feel awful for leaving my team but also excited to see what I can manage to do next. While also knowing the world I am trying to become a full time artist in is... not very friendly to my goals.

I've been wanting to use Tumblr more so I'm hoping to catalogue the journey hear a bit to help keep me on track and straighten out my thoughts.

I’ve been meaning to repaint this Lapis piece for the longest time and I finally got around to it. I love doing these character arc focused pieces. They make me so happy!

The original for reference!

My understanding of facial structure and anatomy is where I really wanted to focused in the paint over. Also, I had a much better grasp of light and shadow which helped the overall readability of the piece.

I think there’s something so deeply and intimately and morbidly true about The Last of Us’s primary thesis which is that humanity’s fatal flaw, in that very Shakespearian way, is that we are destined to care too much about one another so much so that we discard the collective entirely. like we have such a capacity to love the human race and humanity as a whole, to grow our communities and govern cities how we know best and foster such connection with the masses which we are part of, but it’s overtaken by our capacity to love even just a single other person. like one human can come into your life that creates such an intrinsic and passionate love in you— or maybe two people or a family’s worth or any small number— and you suddenly would burn entire villages down just to keep them safe.

joel doesn’t blink twice murdering to find ellie. he doesn’t look back when he decides to do what he does at the hospital later on. he has no remorse about any of it it, because this one girl has grown to mean more to him than any possible greater good could ever mean. and it’s reciprocal. ellie would— and does— do anything she can to help him, save him, protect him, and, eventually, to avenge him. because that’s what you do when you love someone. not when you love people. when you love someone.

and it’s selfish, in a way??? because we love these people and would do so much for them because they mean more to us than other strangers do. it’s exactly like an iteration of the trolley problem, actually. one track has your daughter on it and one track has fifty people. don’t even try telling me you wouldn’t go onto track B if it meant saving your daughter and her puppy dog eyes from the whimpering and pain and fear. The Last of Us says yes, you would. I would. we all would. and like yeah that is our greatest weakness, that we have such a unique ability to love a handful of people so deeply that our compassion towards community and strangers and the bigger collective starts to slip from view. but goddamn what a fucking great fatal flaw it is to have. we are all going to die and the world will burn because we loved another person too much.

Commission Progress

I had a rather massive backlog of commissions from conventions last year that I am finally make good headway on and getting shipped out.

These two were really special. The client wanted memorial pieces for someone who had passed in their style of their favorite animes: Neon Genesis Evangelion and Haibane Renmei.

I told them my style isn’t typically anime leaning and I don’t consider myself to be much of a style mimic, but they really liked my work and thought that she would have too.

Honestly these were the pieces in my commission queue that I was most nervous about and we’re holding me up. They had a lot of meaning tied up in them and not only did I not want to disappoint them, but I also tend to have a hard time starting on things that are emotionally complicated.

But as always for me, once I get through the sketch, things get easier.

I’m very pleased with how both of these turned out with a nice mix between an homage to the styles and still definitely my work. And the client was very happy as well.

I forgot to take pic of the 11x17 prints before shipping them but the colors turned out lovely printed out which is always a worry.

DTIYS Contest!

I have always wanted to do one of these so I figured starting on the second volume of my comic The Fantasy Book Club was as good a reason as any.

The subject is the cover for Issue 5: Open Book which will begin posting on March 31st. Due date for submissions is March 13th.

There are a lot of details in this piece since it was designed as a cover/poster, so don’t feel like you need to recreate it exactly. Be creative and give it your interpretation!

Prizes

Some prizes are/include a physical poster or print. There are limitations on my ability to ship so if physical items don't work for the winners I can provide high res files they can print themselves.

You can enter the contest by tagging me in your piece on any of my social media: here, Instagram, Twitter, or email me at: TheEvilNae@gmail.com.

I redrew about 25% of the panels from the first issue of my comic about a year ago these are a couple of them.

The originals were from 2020 and I honestly have a hard time looking back on them now. I know I’m more critical of my work than others would be but I’m not sure that first issue would be readable if I hadn’t updated the art.

I’m starting to do some planning for a printed version of the Volume 1 and I’m really thinking about redrawing a LOT.
