The Geek Squeaks

@thegeeksqueaks / thegeeksqueaks.tumblr.com

Hi! You can call me Mint, or Geek, or ScienceLady. I’m a writer, special education specialist, high school teacher, crafter and cook. Science is my passion and science education is my purpose in life. Welcome!

SIX HUNDRED WORDS?! THATS IT!!

That is a 35 year old man

600 word essay? I panic-wrote a 35 page research analysis on my own graduate research the weekend before it was due. LAST YEAR.

Weaklings.

Utter fucking weaklings.

I've never been relieved that my alma mater was killed by greed and neglect as the 2008 crisis finally hit (legit the year after I graduated) but the idea of anyone using a fucking AI chat to write their final project makes me seethe.

And someone would fucking try it.

And they wouldn't deserve the degree they got.

You. Do not deserve. Your degree. If you don't do the fucking work to get it.

And Generative AI doing your homework is not work.

Occasionally I get students trying to use it to get their work done for my class or for others, and they get busted every time. G-AI doesn't sound like you, and it never will, because you are a unique being in the universe and no one will think or write exactly like you.

And when I ask a kid what a word they used in their AI answer means and they have no idea, it's a dead give away.

Get on our level, kids. I'm not asking you to handwrite a 20-page report for your sophomore essay like I had to, but maybe do the work yourself. It's good for your brain.

This poll is asking about general walkability, not your personal habits– if there is a supermarket nearby but you do not or cannot personally walk there, vote according to what a hypothetical able-bodied person would be able to do.

We ask your questions anonymously so you don’t have to! Submissions are open on the 1st and 15th of the month.

Not at all reasonable to walk. I DO live outside town, but still

I’m sure someones already said this but I often see Tumblr described as a hellsite. This is fundamentally incorrect.

Tumblr is the faesite. Everybody is super confused and lost, you keep running into random places. Somehow you end up stuck there forever after interacting a couple of times. The people are all strange, everybody simultaneously seems to be from the future and the past as if time is meaningless.

YES

also technology breaks at random, and sometimes you just suddenly feel a thousand years old

  • everybody has a half dozen names and none of them are their “real” name.
  • which name(s) you know gives you different powers over them.
  • there are Rules but you mostly have to figure them out for yourself.
  • getting the Rules wrong or breaking them can cost you more than you ever even knew you had.
  • Maximum Horny at all times
  • be careful what you wish for or you just might get it
  • Gift Of Prophecy
  • Illegal Use Of Bones
  • Holidays are unusual but important and have very specific rites attached

A message from Rob Wilkins.

Shortly before he died, Terry Pratchett assured me that, if there is an afterlife, he would give me a ring and let me know. That was ten years ago - and still no call.

From which, incidentally, I draw no firm conclusions. What if there was an afterlife, but with no phone signal?

But of course there is one place where Terry indisputably lives on: in the pages of his books and in the minds of the millions of readers around the world who turn those pages and continue to find them funny and true. For, while his words live on, so does Terry, and that will be the case, no question, not just for this one decade so quickly gone, but for many further decades to come.

So let me join Lyn and Rhianna in raising a glass today to the magical persistence of books and to Sir Terry; gone but still so very firmly with us.

first time writing fanfiction of a character : uughh i hope this is all canon accurate... it cant be canon innacurate at all or the enitire fandom will throw rocks at me...

10057th time writing the character: heres them working at a mcdonalds

The fandom keep throwing rocks at you btw, you just get better at dodging

Sometimes you also learn to use those rocks to build your own little castle of fandom fun!

go to this random coordinates generator and say in the tags how you would fare if you were dropped where it generates without warning. i’ll go first i’d be dropped in the middle of the fucking south atlantic ocean and perish

You are offered $20,000. In order to get the $20,000, you have to listen to the album chosen by the wheel from start to finish in one sitting. No breaks, no turning down the volume, no taking off the headphones. You have to listen to the album in its entirety.

No "I don't know this album" option, search it up yourselves and listen for a few seconds, expand your media diet

Oh HELL YES, I would totally listen to this. While Leather Jackets received pretty negative reviews when it came out, it's got some great bits in it, and he collaborates with both Cliff Richards and Cher!

Plus it's the last studio album where he was still playing the grand piano.

Hi, I'm looking at the signups and I have a question about what qualifies as 'woman' in this instance. It's noted that "Trans and NB characters, can be included, so long as they’re either canon trans/nb or a canon cis woman character you headcanon as trans or nonbinary" in the FAQ, and this leaves out our MTF sisters as well as FTM with canonically male characters. I have friends, colleagues and students who all fall under that category...why are they excluded here?

.......trans women are included ?? ??? That's what we mean by "trans and NB (nonbinary) characters" in that context. Not that you can't include them at all. I've updated the FAQ to be more explicit about that context since it seems there's some confusion.

To clarify further, however:

Canon Trans women and nonbinary characters*** are eligible as part of the main ships participants can write about for the challenge. Any canonical men (cis or trans men) are not eligible, including any genderswap/rule 63 content to make a het or slash ship femslash (see here for clarification).

To again, be 1000000% clear on our position, trans women are women, and NB people can be sapphic or lesbians. The Femslash Big Bang does not endorse any kind of transphobic rhetoric.

***ofc this can be such a grey area with NB characters, but the rule of thumb (imperfect as it may be) is that if they are canon sapphic OR could be considered sapphic if they were with a woman/women (u can write all-nb pairings so long as everyone in the ship meets that metric). This can also include characters that fall into some more ambiguous niches or have no canon gender like a video game protagonist (i.e. like a DA Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor/Rook or BG3 Tav/Durge).

You're deliberately leaving out any character that's canonically male, no matter what the reason. A common one I see in my fandom circles is Sephiroth being shoehorned into presenting as male because that's the expectation of SOLDIER. The community contains a multitude of trans/nb/genderfluid headcanons for this character that make sense both in and out of the source content.

Trying to separate your personal idea of what 'counts' isn't helping your argument.

Because what you're saying is that if the character was born with a penis in canon, unless they're identified as trans in canon (Tiger and Magne from BNHA, for example), they're excluded from being part of the main pairing no matter what the author writes them as. In the eyes of the event organizers, those characters are always and forever men, which says a hell of a lot about how you view anyone AMAB who identifies outside of the binary.

Genderbend/swap and Rule 63 are outdated terms that I rarely, if ever, see in use anymore. This is largely because we were using them in a time when the mainstream didn't have the right words or understanding to properly explain what we were trying to portray in our writing. Today you just see tags like F!Prompto or trans!Sephiroth and can figure out from there whether or not you want to continue. Femslash writers run the gamut of identities themselves, and as an author who has queer, poly MTF fanfiction authors in her own life, I feel comfortable saying that you are cherry picking what you think counts as fem.

You don't get to choose who trans women are or how they 'qualify'. Not in any reality.
