The down with the cis bus is real I know I was hiding in the luggage compartment.
He/Him (he/they if we’re friends) Born to write silly little stories, forced to live under capitalism. 21+

Leftist infighting right now is especially not needed

The amount of name calling and finger pointing and jokes about moving to another country and how much you hate the Midwest and the south and how many of y’all know where the food bank is?

No I’m being so dead ass do you know where the food bank is? The homeless shelter? Do you know the name of the domestic violence shelter near you? Do you know your neighbors???

Last bit I’m adding to this. Whenever I start talking about community a LOT of y’all get confused thinking I mean people in your vicinity who agree with everything that you stand for. I don’t. I’m sorry. I mean your community. And I’m talking about the goals of said communities.

I originally put this in the tags, but FindHelp.org is a great place to start! It is US-based specifically tho. You put in your zip code and it'll give you information on organizations from housing to medical care to transportation to volunteering and more. It has filters so you can look for local, state, and national organizations

y'all know that whole left-brained/right-brained thing is fake right? and the "brain fully develops at age 25" thing? and the "we only use 10% of our brains" thing? yeah they're all complete horseshit please yell at anyone who says them

okay people are doing nuance in the notes about the kernels of truth in neuroscience myths but I really really need you to understand that that is not important here. people don't believe there are "right-brained" and "left-brained" people because they've misunderstood lateralisation of the central nervous system, they believe it because that binary framework was deliberately pushed by people who wanted to define who was logical enough to lead, and surprise surprise, white adult heterosexual men are left-brained. people don't believe the brain "finishes developing at 25" because they've misunderstood life stage differences in neuroplasticity, they believe it because the idea that children, teens, and young adults have inferior brains is a convenient rationalisation for a society that marginalises them. people don't believe you "only use 10% of your brain" because they misread an fMRI study, they believe it because it's useful bullshit for everyone from hyperindividualist historical revisionists pushing the great genius concept of scientific progress to hucksters recruiting for cults that will teach you to unlock your latent telekinesis for just $5000 a month. that's why it's fucking important to know that many popular science ideas are false and to push back on them loudly and frequently, because they're not just mildly incorrect, they are often active components of systems of violence.

in social media world if you insinuate that most men hate women you’ll get called a transphobe by people that think some men not being able to fully benefit from the patriarchy means they don’t have the capacity to be misogynistic

Yes, it’s true that trans men don’t have power over cis women, but what about TRANS women??? Also why are they acting like trans men are incapable of hating women or being anti-feminist? I understand that that user might be a cis woman and so she’s probably trying to be an “ally” but there is no group of men that is exempt from misogyny and transmisogyny, and acting like trans men are a special innocent precious exception to male privilege and benefiting from misogyny is both a) not taking trans men’s gender seriously and saying that they aren’t “really” men, but “actually women/female-socialized” and b) denying that trans women exist, much less that they are oppressed by trans men. It’s not cute at all. Get it together.

Edit: I am so stupid, I just checked the url and it seems that she is a trans woman??? Which, if I’m correct, makes her comment even weirder.

Literally nobody is exempt from being misogynistic. Nobody is exempt from patriarchal conditioning. Isn’t that like one of the most basic tenets of feminism???? When did we lose sight of this?

The rest of the queers aren't allowed to exclude asexuals anymore; we've got the JK Rowling Seal of Disapproval! It's official, we belong!

You know it legally is a charity, right?

If x charity aims for £10, but gets £15, would you expect then to give back the extra five or give it then to another charity? No. Any extra costs go into the “rainy day” fund; sometimes servers crash or break, sometimes false reports are made that require the legal team, sometimes you need to hire coders or what not to implement new features or fix bugs or deal with broken code …

The money they aimed for is the bare minimum, which goes towards things like basic server costs and domain names and legal advice and so forth, but they don’t just “pocket” the rest (as people claim). It’s not a business. It has no advertisements. It needs some “rainy day” cash to function.

You can’t ask a charity to give money to another charity.

It needs what it gets to function and improve.

They don’t “pocket” excess money. They have a publicly accessible budget - waaaay more info than most charities, in fact. In it, you can clearly see where each dollar goes. (Also, you are vastly underestimating either how much traffic AO3 gets or how much servers/hosting costs.)

In my experience, people who don’t work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. I’m talking “more than the library of congress” crazy. The only reason it doesn’t require Netflix levels of data serving is that it’s text based rather than video.

AO3 is in the top 300 websites in the world, and the top 100 in the US. It is the number 2 literature website.

Number 2 in the entire world. JSTOR is 20.

It sees about 6 million people a day. About 250k an hour. Each of those people is loading multiple pages, many are running searches that execute on literally hundreds of potential variables per search. The demands involved are astronomical.

JSTOR, btw, makes 85 million dollars a year.

It’s 18 ranks below AO3′s traffic, and takes in 650 times the amount of money.

But let’s say you think that’s an unfair comparison. Would you say that the Project Gutenberg Literature Archival Group- another text based archive that handles literature operating outside traditional copyright requirements- is more similar?

Because it sees all of 4% of the traffic that AO3 handles.

Care to guess its budget?

Double that of AO3.

AO3 is doing shit on the kind of shoestring budget that I fully, 100% cannot comprehend. And that’s just the archival service.

The 130k also pays for the OTW’s legal team, which they use to defend the right of fandom to fucking exist.

It’s absolutely batshit fucked up that people are fighting to have the OTW defunded and AO3 shut down. They are the only organized group that actually stands directly between fandom- all the art and the fics and the vids and the music and the chats and the memes and everything we love about interactive, transformative work- and an incalculable amount of lawsuits.

This is the most functionally-successful and cost-effective website in the history of EVER. By a wide margin.

No but for real, I have worked in nonprofits basically my entire working life and the fact that AO3 had managed to continue existing is basically a miracle in my eyes.

they could have said, like, "we made a new wolf morph, which shows how far genetic science has advanced". they could have said, "we're calling them direwolves out of a love for the extinct species." maybe too much to ask for but would have loved it if they'd pointed out some kind of ecological niche they were theoretically intent on resolving - like, "wolves are having trouble adapting to human sprawl and we are hoping that our research into the past will help us save wolves in the present."

but alas they did not do this. and see this sucks because i want to be hype about new bigass fantasy wolves. there is a 7th grade version of me that would be ecstatic about this. she would be obsessive.

unfortunately, due to capitalism, now i gotta have beef with puppies. can you imagine.
