I’ve been looking at this official comic wondering how you could localise this into English…
Yugamu and Kyoshika are both using the phrase 「やれやれ」 "yare yare"—an expression of exasperation/relief similar to the English "give me a break", "thank god", or "jeez". To translate it literally, it’d be something like:
Yugamu: You can’t be serious Kyoshika: My lord…
However, the joke here is based on Yugamu and Kyoshika’s odd speech patterns, which don’t come across when translated directly.
You may have noticed the prevalence of 「殺」 in Yugamu’s Japanese dialogue. In Yugamu’s written dialogue any instance of the 「や」 "ya" sound is replaced with 「殺」 to pun on 「殺る」 "yaru"—or, to kill someone. So 「やれやれ」 ("yare yare") turns into 「殺れ殺れ」 ("yare yare")—"I have to kill you".
Meanwhile, Kyoshika’s speech contains archaic expressions associated with samurai. She uses 「でござる」 "de gozaru"—a variation on the standard "to be" verb, 「です」 "desu". It carries about as much meaning as "am" would in English without the rest of a sentence to contextualise it. However, there are many variations of "desu" in Japanese. Which a speaker can use to convey tone and personal characteristics. When Kyoshika says 「やれやれでござる」 "yare yare de gozaru" she’s saying: “For goodness sake. By the way, I’m a samurai.”
Based on all that, I came up with this localisation:
Yugamu: Just kill me already Kyoshika: At this rate, I might as well commit seppuku…
It’s not perfect, especially on Yugamu’s end. I could’ve translated his dialogue as something like "I need to kill this guy", but I decided to preserve Yugamu and Kyoshika expressing the same sentiment in their unique ways. Which meant removing Yugamu’s implicit threat flying over Kyoshika’s head.
If you have any other ideas on how to localise this, feel free to share. I considered having Yugamu use a euphemism for murder which Kyoshika would misinterpret, but I couldn’t think of one that would make sense for Kyoshika to see as an innocent expression of frustration.
I’m by no means an expert on Japanese, but I hope this gave some insight into just how tricky the translation process can be—even for a single panel comic.
