Swinging both ways, violently, with a bat. Brit, she/her, ScribeofArda on ao3 where I have no control and can't stop writing sequels. Author of A Thread Unraveled and the aurë entuluva verse, the time loop fix-it of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad that has gotten way out of hand

pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering

Sir Terry Pratchett was not remotely in the vicinity of Fucking-Around, and had never even heard of that ridiculous thing some of his esteemed colleagues referred to as “Chill.” (1)

(1) In point of fact, he had heard of it, on numerous occasions, most often when a friend or well-meaning-but-politely-horrified acquaintance advised him to locate some, but he always studiously ignored this in favor of a much more productive righteous fury, which he kept hot enough to boil the kettle for his afternoon tea. If the world was not going to work as it should, then damn it all, he would create one in which people had some blasted sense for a change. And he did. Spite, as it turns out, makes for an excellent motivator.

Summary:

Chapter Seven: In which morning comes, and people begin to move forwards.

So I've been having thoughts about the hunt of oromë as a religion lately and how that relates to celegorm and (in my headcanon, anyway) aredhel

The whole point of oromë is that he hunts evil things, right? And loves the wilderness. So if he's the vala of the wild, he also represents freedom (even socially he probably does -- a memory of cuiviénen, before they had things like kings)

Aredhel, in her story, is denied freedom and becomes the hunted, whereas celegorm starts to hunt non-evil things, both of them inverting their previous way of life. But huan, given to him by oromë, doesn't leave celegorm... until he denies lúthien her own freedom

First rule of wildlife the hunt of oromë: don't try to tame wild creatures by force! Huan leaves because celegorm has gotten himself excommunicated for breaking the tenets of the hunt

I'm doing a small reread of Thread and I reached the part of For All Things That Drum where Maedhros, Fingon and Azaghal are eating lunch and Maedhros is half-asleep bc Fingon's fingers feel great in his hair.

He catches moments, the layering of precious stones and the direction of carvings on beads, what it means to wear gold and silver in the same plait. They drift past, unhurried, and he lets them continue on.

And my mind went: Maedhros and Fingon's marriage bond is mixed silver and blue with red and gold right? DOES THIS MEAN THERE'S A SECRET DRAWVEN MEANING????

So, ugh, sorry for the shouting but please tell me there's something cool behind this and I'm not seeing things

Hehehehehehehehehe.

Yes, there is a meaning behind that. In Dwarven cultures, a mixture of silver and gold in plaits- whether the same or different ones differs from culture to culture- is used to represent significant love for another person. They can only be worn if gifted by someone else, together. It can mean romantic or platonic love- kids will often wear ones gifted by their parents or carers when they are young, and as they grow this may change or be swapped out for something gifted by a lover, or a friend, or a comrade. There are slight differences on the weight of gold to silver or the patterns to differentiate who gave it and the type of love intended, but that's the broad pattern across the wider Dwarven culture.

And if you'll allow me to dust off my chemistry skills, there's a reason for this! Gold and silver are popular metals for a reason, namely that they are widely available. They're just there, in the ground, waiting for you to find. They don't need processing to extract in the same way something like iron, which exists naturally as oxides, will need. That's why they're used for jewellery and everything in real life- they're easily accessible, as well as being pretty. They are always there.

The reason gold was used as currency for so long is because it doesn't tarnish. It's one of the few metals (possibly the only one?) where the surface doesn't react to oxygen and doesn't oxidise to form a tarnish. It's incredibly stable in that sense. Interestingly, nobody knows 100% why this happens, but it does. It's unchanging and constant.

Silver, on the other hand, does tarnish. Without proper care it will go black. It requires maintenance and care.

Combine all of these? You have something that is always there in nature waiting to be discovered, that is both constant and unchanging but requires care and upkeep to maintain- sounds a lot like love.

me too maegs

But Tuor is such a sweetie!  Now this makes me wonder what would have happened if it had been the other cousin who ended up in Gondolin - if Túrin had gone there, and Tuor had gone to Nargothrond instead.

Would Maeglin have thought “At last!  Someone who understands me and my Tragic Past!” or would they have brought the city down in ten minutes flat upon first meeting?

if he was still alive I know in my heart that Terry Pratchett would have done a bit about Igors and Igorinas doing gender confirmation surgery by now. going into a lab full of bubbling vials and picking out a penis from a tank the way you pick a lobster. that one, please. you gotta be careful though because they'll really try to upsell you into getting two or three installed. people going to the clinic as pairs and just having parts swapped out for a discounted rate. maybe you actually just trade brains, that's even easier. Igorth have already been doing that thurgery for thenturieth.

Everyone knew it was best not to look too closely at Igor's jars.

Vimes was beginning to wish he had looked more closely at the most recent additions before Igor came lurching up the stairs to inform him:

"They have ethcaped, thir."

"Escaped. What has escaped, Igor."

"Thome of my.. appendageth, thir."

"Appendages."

"Yeth, thir. Of the... intimate variety."

"Of the intimate..." Vimes trailed off as the dawning horror overwhelmed his vocal cords.

He rallied. "Igor. HOW have they escaped? They are not known for their... perambulatory abilities."

"Really, thir? I've alwayth found them to have a mind of their own at timeth."

Vimes was staying calm. Yes. That was it. He was staying very calm. Definitely NOT thinking AT ALL about how Vetinari and... Good lord, The Times, would react to marauding pack of penises. Would it be a pack? Or would they go off on their own?

"I wath exthperimenting with cuthtom grown oneth, you know. For thothe who cannot grow their own."

"Err... what? Of course you were. I mean. Very good."

It turns out to be a brilliant feat of advertisement, as the people too shy or uncertain to go visit Igor rightaway effectively get a chance to discretely window-shop in public.

An unfortunate side effect being that a small girl, denied of her rightful need to be a Horse Girl by the limitations of being a native Ankh-Morpork child[1], would have adopted one of the larger Appendages of the pack and named it Free Willy. Her insistence that she could understand her pet through a bond of mutual sympathy was both touching and troubling, as was her announcement that Free Willy did not want to be attached to a governing body and forced into service, saddled with clothing, or made to perform tricks for audiences. With no Igor having the heart [2] to take it from her, the child was allowed to keep Free Willy, who lived for five healthy years in her family’s pigeon loft and eventually passed away from natural causes after a battle with another fighting cock. The child went on to write a well-acclaimed children’s book, The Willy that Would Be Free, which was, necessarily, a pop-up book.

Look, it got longer.

So did Free Willy.
