FRANKENSTEIN (1931) and DRACULA (1931)- 1947
I feel like the tightening restriction of weapons in the UK, going as far as to explicitly ban fucking swords, is, more than anything, an attempt to reduce violence to a more and more individual and animalistic act in order to deny greater social complicity.
For a man to be killed with a firearm, a firearm needs to be produced. Other men need to operate lathes, and mills, and injection molding presses in order to produce a firearm. Others still need to produce powder, manufacture casings and bullets. The mechanical sophistication required for gun violence is civilization.
A man points a gun at a man, and the gun fires a bullet, which shoots the man. Reduce the automation, reduce the sophistication, reduce the civilization. Make men stab and bludgeon other men. Make the violence bespoke and artisanal. Make it more involved, deliberate, animal; less civilized. Less complicity. This man was not of a greater social system which pushed him to the point he is at now. The machines which produced this older, more agreeable violence are themselves older, less civilized. This man did not operate a machine himself, but swung a tool. The weapon is now more an extension of the body. The man is more culpable. These actions are more deliberate. Fewer people were involved in the process of making this tool. It is simply a shaped piece of metal, it is no longer a machine. Now the man is himself the machine.
We cannot allow the man to access these tools any longer. We cannot allow these shapes to end up in the hands of the man. These pipes and levers and wedges are facilitating violence among men. Deny their part in our civilization even further. They can't hold the same tools we do, their hands are different. Make the man beat the other man with his hands. The man is now the tool, the weapon, the machine which renders violence. It is the man, not the civilization, which is violent.
What it is, I guess, is that gun violence is a reminder that we have the ability to do better, but we are failing. So we ban the guns to stop being reminded. Then, in the UK, people have gone back to killing each other with swords. We have now gone backwards. Let's ignore that too. Anyone who carries this symbol of our regression is to be imprisoned, because I don't feel like thinking about it.
