I didn't like Merlin's design so I changed it a bit! Also added Arthur because I wanted to draw his cape and armour.

Still not 100% happy with these designs, but it's all part of the process!

The dynamic between Arthur and Gwaine is so interesting to me. They are both men who struggle with trust and abandonment issues. They both have so much anger and self hatred. But in Gwaine it manifests as a drinking problem (to numb the feelings, and to become that funny cool guy everyone likes because he is easy to get along with and doesn't have this huge amount of emotional baggage) , getting into brawls (punishing himself for drinking or for feeling) and flirting with every single person he comes across (avoiding any deep meaningful connections bc then ppl would realize he's not that nonchalant careless guy and would abandon him) and Arthur isolates (avoiding needing people bc eventually they would leave and he doesn't want to be hurt and humiliated again but also as a punishment for himself bc he shouldn't need other people that's weak, a lesson he learned from Uther), broods and denies himself to feel his emotions. (a king needs to be strong)

They are literally the same but they are so different. And I think thats why they struggle to get along sometimes because they recognize that wound in the other but they have a very different way of coping.

Or they just both wanted to kiss Merlin and were jealous who knows

I also think their coping mechanism reflects how their losses have been treated before.

Gwaine, who had needed help and been abandoned, constantly seeking attention. If nobody helps him when he has problems, he becomes the problem instead.

Arthur, whose mistakes have been highlighted by his father every time he did something 'wrong', isolates and hides in order to avoid attention.

this scene will haunt me till my dying day... ok, let me explain this:

we get absolutely gutwrenching lines from merlin and nothing but complete confusion from arthur....

and then of course this iconic interaction:

The whole scene is equal parts funny and heart-shattering, because Merlin is saying goodbye to the love of his life Arthur, preparing to sacrifice himself, while Arthur just has no clue whatsoever about what is going on and is very confused by Merlin's sincerity.

I often find this scene a bit hard to understand from Arthur's point of view. And then I remember that he'd almost died from the questing beast attack. And if I remember correctly, he was constantly dragging Merlin aside, and jumping in front of Merlin to protect him.

From Arthur's point of view, this is Merlin being worried about him. It surprises Arthur that Merlin says this, but I think to him it sounds a bit like Merlin is also angry.

'you're a great warrior, but you must learn to listen' translates to Arthur as 'I told you to be careful and you've been reckless.'

'I'm proud to be your servant.' 'you will make a great King' this is not a 'without me' to Arthur. It sounds more to him like Merlin is telling him that he saw the sacrifice. That he saw Arthur's intentions to rule well.

And it ends with 'you're a pratt' for having me worried.

That's how I read this scene anyway

Random thought but like, do you realize that mating calls are what draws attention to predators?

I mean, I came across a post on bird sounds and that a cat immediately was drawn to the sound. I know it's like obvious and stuff, but

Do you think the birds know? Do you think a part of them is thrilled that there are predators after them? Like it's part of a kink or smth?

No kink shaming, some people do seem to be into that. Which is the thought behind this. Like, if you talk only about (allo) 'primal instincts' that this sort of desire for being targeted exists because that's the trait that allowed them to go outside and try to mate in the first place? Like that's how that trait survived?

Do you think there are quiet birds out there that we simply do never see because they hide in the shadows and find partners through other means?
