2.09 — The Lady of the Lake
That first gif though, omg. Do you see that?
The micro expressions! He leans forward, ready to face this thing He's meant to face for a couple dwys. He's there liking his lips, steading himself to say something and be a friend. He looks at Merlin, up.
Then freezes, presses his lips together as if he's thinking: shit, I don't actually know what I'm doing. I've never done this before. This is new for us. It's only small. But it's like he backtracks in that moment.
It's not panic, not even uncertainty. Arthur looks empathetic and careful, like he doesn't quite know what to say. Maybe he looks at Merlin, ready to do what a knight bro does and then suddenly realises that: oh. Yeah. This is Merlin.
The second gif is just Arthur repeating that. This is Merlin. I don't have to be a fancy hero or a knight in shining armor. I just need to be his friend. And as his friend, I've always gotten away with being an arse. He needs that, probably. Me, being myself, me, not pretending to be something i'm not or pretend I understand something I don't. He doesn't want to be pitied. He'll see the intention for what it is.
The third one is Arthur being delighted that his scheme worked. He's happy Merlin laughed. Happy that Merlin is happy, completely unfiltered.
And the last one he returns to be a sassy little bitch: ha, Merlin, look at this. I'm your best friend. Only I could make you laugh when you're brooding over my shoes. Only I, the Prince, who is your friend. *Eyes Sparkle happily*
