Disabled lives are not inherently filled with suffering and when they are it’s usually because someone put it there.
If you listen to this testimony you'll understand why documenting sexual violence against women in Palestinian society is not as heavily talked about as sexual violence against men. A lot of women are told/pressured not to say anything if they are sexually assaulted by Israelis because of the social implications against themselves and the male members of the family.
Sometimes women are not allowed to leave their villages without men in Palestine, like my grandmother couldn't leave without her dad or brother while she was in Palestine but outside it she freely came and went where ever. My other grandma left her village and studied as a nurse in Palestine but only because she was with her sisters and brother. Even in the 90's my mom, who freely went out of Amman and even dormed outside of Amman, where her parents lived, she had to go with her younger brother to visit Jerusalem (the only time she ever went to Palestine as an adult) because her family was so scared she would be in danger from Israelis.
Like it's an unspoken knowledge that Israelis can and will sexually assault you at checkpoints or just randomly and no one even cared for 75 years, which is why talking about how israelis face sexual assault from Palestinians is so bewildering because it's like a complete reversal of reality. Even my parents are worried to let me visit Palestine with an American passport because they dont want something to happen to me at a checkpoint. It's so shocking to me that no one cares about the sexual violence Palestinians face when it permeates literally every aspect of Palestinian society.
I’m losing my mind

The thing is I would be a lot less upset about paying $80 dollars for a video game if
A. The money actually went to the laborers and developers who made the game in the first place.
B. Prices for most console games were more flexible, and actually went down over time, rather than selling a years-old game from the last generation at a markup from it's original MSRP.
C. The price was adjusted for places where buying a video game can cost several month's paycheck.
Like games as a medium, especially big AAA titles, take an absurd amount of labor hours to make. In a just world, maybe GTA VI or whatever should be $100 dollars, given how many people probably bled for probably a decade to make it! Unfortunately that money will not, in this industry, go back to the developers, the coders, the artists who made the damn thing. They'll be worked to death, paid peanuts, and fired as soon as the game releases.
if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isn’t
someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter
most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely don’t and didn’t when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you don’t
homeless people actually can’t be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right
This post is the distilled essence of everything I believe in.

im in actual disbelief that this just happened while i was writing down this joke to remember later
its 1am and i am overwhelmed with love for a person who kindly and knowledgeably answered questions on a forum about niche topics. this is not the first time and it absolutely will not be the last
I wanted to figure out how to identify/describe a silver blade vs a steel blade for a fic, and I found a post on silver-collecter.com from 2010, and answers from a man named uncle_vic:
in this same thread, olewheat asked about another silver piece; uncle_vic explained that blades were not made from silver, because it'd be too soft - often carbon steel would be silver plated, and eventually get pitted.
after a volley of questions, several users asked if they could contact uncle_vic directly. vic responded, very kindly:
I am always, always charmed by a clearly veteran hobbyist helping out new people on a forum, and i wanted to see what else uncle_vic posted, what other nuggets about his life i could learn, and it turns out he was a pillar of the community:
He joined in 2006, when the website was only 2 months old, and throughout the next 6 years, he helped many identify their silver pieces, and welcomed them all with: "Hi there and thanks for joining us", and always ended with a "Regards, Uncle Vic"
He helped so often, he'd post on the social thread to let people know he'd be gone without internet access for an extended period of time!
These often didn't get many interactions, but he did so anyway, like a journal made public: one about how a hurricane was reaching him in Baton Rouge; several about his fishing trips, like this one in 2011:
A year later, he wrote a similar vacation post, which became his final topic on the forum, titled: "Gone fishin'".
In May 2012, 3 months later, a newer user asked Vic what type of fishing he liked.
Vic replied: (content warning for cancer)
This was Uncle Vic's last post on the silver-collecter.com forums. Unflinchingly honest, and this time, instead of his usual "Regards", he ended with "Keep the Faith".
According to the obituary posted in the same thread, he passed away the next day, at his camp on the Tickfaw river -- well known for fishing.

This isn't the first time I've come across kind, dedicated forum users, usually knowledgeable retirees, who suddenly stop posting; it certainly won't be the last. But everytime I fall in love with them, and in turn, with humanity even more, to see what we leave behind.
A retired Cajun lawyer from Baton Rouge found a silver collecting forum from a hobbyist magazine in 2006, and decided to spend the next 6 years, up to his dying day, sharing his life, his love, and his knowledge with strangers.
Thank you, Uncle Vic, for the forum users you helped; thank you for the countless, anonymous users who found your posts through search engines like me.
I'm glad your corner of the internet exists so that, 12 years since you've been gone, I can visit and you can still teach me a whole lot about identifying silver and silver makers.
you could never make me spend 80 dollars on a video game honestly
450 for a console is a price id be willing to put savings towards to get eventually in theory. but if the games are gonna be 80 dollars i just dont think its worth it. nintendos unparalleled levels of greed on display have turned me off beyond belief. pay money to play enhanced versions of games you already own on the new console. pay 70 for a digital game and 10 dollars more for physical. pay 80 for this digital game code so you can download the game. spend money on the tech demo. like be so fr right now
