This is my version of episode 159 from The Magnus Archives. Thank you to the friends who cheered me on though the project, the cool folks who hung out with me on twitch, and my awesome sister who is too scared to finish the podcast but will listen to me talk about it for hours on end.

And, of course, thank you to Jonny Sims, Alex Newall, Alasdair Stuart and and the rest of the crew and cast behind TMA (I'm so looking forward to the Magnus Protocol!)

I love animation, I love storyboarding, I love the Magnus Archives.

as i'm sure you already know, israel has resumed aggressive bombardment of gaza as of march 18th. at least 400 people have already been killed, with hundreds more wounded or buried under the rubble. on top of this, israel has also been almost completely obstructing the entry of aid for the past several weeks, and cut off power to the last functioning water desalination plant on march 9th.

it is more important than ever that those of us outside gaza do not attempt to ignore the ongoing genocide in favor of the illusion of security. any small thing you can do is better than complacency.

if you need a place to start:

you can find more campaigns to support here, here, or here, or a big (nonexhaustive) list of gazan organizations and mutual aid initiatives here. if you have the fortune of disposable income, i highly encourage you to contribute something in any of these directions. it can truly help save lives.

IT"S FINALLY DONE!!!!!!!!!!! Check out my animation of the title song from Nerdy Prudes Must Die, a horror musical from @teamstarkid You can watch the FULL stage show on their youtube channel!

https://youtu.be/PG3RDdyD_GQ?si=Rhxg6asT0MMoTTXd This clip features Jon Matteson as Richie, Will Branner as Max! The story and script is by Nick and Matt Lang, with music and lyrics by Jeff Blim!

Painting vs reference! The lighting in the live-action sections of Fantasia are SO COOL! I love how the really intense colorful spotlights look on the technicolor print!

Painting took about 70-90 minutes, I am not sure, I definitely got IN THE ZONE at the last stretch and forgot to check the clock!

Photos on left, paintings on right

Half hour each! Man, between the fuzzy surface and multiple light sources, these references were waaaaay more difficult to paint than I thought! I may re-paint these studies again someday now that I learned so much struggling through them the first time!

photos vs 30 min studies!

This week's study was reeeally hard, that colored lighting presented a big challenge! Thank you to @neunhofferart for the reference photos.

30 minutes, no eye dropper tool. I'm using the default gouache brush in clip studio paint, I really like it!

Try it yourself! If a half hour sounds just too scary, set your timer for an hour and focus on on painting what you see!

half hour photo studies!

Photos on the left, paintings on the right! This exercise is about really simplifying the process down and focusing on painting what I see! For me the rules are one layer, one brush (CSP default gouache) and no eyedropper tool on the reference image (I use it on my own painting once I've got the colors down)

Captain Piltover: The Winter Herald

i am so lost in the Jayvik sauce rn (yeah I put Hextech shoujo bubbles everywhere)

back to basics

Half hour photo studies, one layer, no using the color picker/eyedropper tool on the reference (which was a STRUGGLE!!!!)

A real workout for the muscles in the "color and light" section of my brain so I can paint more complex things from my imagination!

"We deserve a soft epilogue, my love..."

Been thinking a lot about Jayvik this week. Had a rough few months, felt nice to be self indulgent with this. Poses based on a shot from "We Live In Time".
