25+, my first Tumblr account! Still learning how to navigate.

AU where Hot Rod discovers he's an Outlier when he destroys Nyon, entering his city to burn to death alongside it but surviving instead. Tragically his home is gone and everyone he loves is dead by his hand, but there is a silver lining. He now has an extremely powerful Outlier ability to create fire at will, perfect for the upcoming war. It just, you know, also coincidentally recreates the most traumatic event in his life.

Of course poor Hot Rod tries to avoid using his ability, but the first time his team's overrun by Decepticons he panics and lights them on fire. That's when he finds out his flames can't be put out until whatever's burning is ashes, no matter how desperately he pleads for it to stop. The experience leaves Hot Rod catatonic on the battlefield, mind caught on the worst moment of his life. When he awakens he swears off using his ability even if it kills him, but he inevitably goes back on that promise as the lives of his friends and allies are continuously put at stake as the war heats up.

I have way too many thoughts about this movie, so here are 10 things I am not fine with in Transformers One:

1. The plot

2. Orion and D catching each other before the other falls to their death

- Thank you to that one person on Pinterest, who pointed out that Orion extended his fingers because he knew D would be there to catch him, whereas D's hand is limp because he didn't believe Orion would catch him. I am ill🙂.

3. B-127 being in awe and very scared of the unknown

- When the train gets to the surface they all fall silent, but the way B breathes when looking around is so 😿 And his expression when the tail-end foof the train is about to crash onto them !!!

- "A cave with teeth. Nothing scary about that." He is in the company of experienced miners who have no problem going to such palces, but still, when was the last time he had seen anything other than the interior of sublevel 50

- When Alpha Trion wakes up, Pax is the one stepping forward and B takes a few steps back

- His optics are very sensitive to brighter lights, yet again a result of his time in sublevel 50. For example he has to shield them when the Matrix starts to glow in Optimus's chest

- Also his size makes me wonder how old he was when he was left in sublevel 50. I take it he didn't get that much energon growing up... (I know he's usually small in the franchise, but indulge me this one time)

4. D's slow separation from the group

- He's sitting the farthest away from the three when they've learned about Sentinel's betrayal and the Primes' deaths

- His exhilaration when after succesfully transforming he kills the whoever it was + how Pax reacts to it

- Hostility towards Pax: "I. got. it."

- Before being captured by the High Guard, he is the one driving on the lead and the rest three come behind him

- When fighting against Starscream, how his pure rage brings out the gun on his arm. His rage and hatred reveal the hidden part of him, therefore showing his true colors. There was no going back to the before after that and I need to do a whole character analysis of this guy hoolyyy

Yknow, everyone’s assumed B-127 was physically unable to leave sublevel 50, but I don’t think that’s the case.

I think it was a slow decent.

  • He talks about how “the shift manager up there really doesn’t like to be bothered.” So he believes he’s acquainted with a shift manager above sub-level 50.
  • He knows how to get out. Orion and Dee weren’t knights in shining armor who freed him from his castle, Bee showed them the exit through the garbage chute, which he talks about like he’s used before.
  • “Cause I’m just so good at what I do…” It sounds like a lie, but I don’t think he’s imaginative enough to come up with that himself from (the popular hc of) misunderstanding that he was thrown and/or left down there to die or starve. He’s the one who brought energon onto the expedition, his needs are seemingly being met. I think he was told that by people who just wanted him to shut up and go away.
  • 㐃 Additionally, why would he have been scrapped in the first place; For being annoying? Even when Darkwing threw Dee & Orion down there, it was for challenging the discriminatory caste system that he as a cop relied on and actively embarrassing him in the race in front of all of Iacon, not yapping.

drooling into a towel. I feel like an elderly toothless dog.

It's that time of year when Tumblr celebrates Easter by posting pictures of crucified anime characters, and inevitably somebody in the notes will pop up to helpfully explain that crucifixion imagery has no cultural significance in Japanese media because Japan is only about 1% Christian, which bugs me because it's completely wrong.

It's true that in the majority of cases, crucifixion in Japanese cartoons isn't meant to be conveying any specific theological message, but something Western audiences are likely to miss is that a large portion of those random crucifixion scenes are referencing Ultraman.

Ultraman's creator was a devout Roman Catholic who explicitly intended the titular hero to read as a Christ figure, and consequently, various Ultramen have been crucified on multiple unconnected occasions throughout the franchise's history. Crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons are often directly name-checking particular crucifixion incidents from Ultraman, right down to emulating the compositions and camera angles of specific shots. It's like an especially morbid version of the Akira slide.

The upshot is that, while it's true that the inclusion of gratuitous crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons typically has no (intentional) theological message, stating that they have no cultural significance is incorrect. A large chunk of the Japanese viewing audience are going to see them and immediately go "hey, that's an Ultraman reference".

Anyway, as an image tax, have a shot of four crucified Ultramen miraculously resurrecting a fifth Ultraman by shooting laser beams out of their hearts:

[Ultraman Ace (1972), episode 14, "The Five Stars that Scattered Throughout the Galaxy", about nineteen and a half minutes in, if you're terribly curious to see this shot in its original context.]

The mania for crucifixion in anime came up randomly today and Kiana was like "oh, it's all Ultraman's fault." That's a 20+ year mystery solved, thanks! Now I know why this happened

trying to stop drooling but there's blood coming out of my mouth and nose

> I hope you get hit by a car

> I hope you get bit by a dog

"I hope you get hit by a dog"

Screamer didn’t say anything about Bees raunchy wing flutters because he was too busy staring stupidly at them like a slackjawed idiot to process that other people existed around them (you know he throws a possessive hissy fit if he sees any other wingmech looking at Bees wings. Fluffs himself up and postures about so that everyone knows those wings are property of Starscream, Lord Of The Skies. And also bee I guess. By association lol. )

Primus’ Nepotism (Long Post!)

So. I, er. I was deep-trawling through TFWiki the other day, as you do when you’re a TF fanfic writer, and I spotted something that I… honestly didn’t know, but intrigued me greatly. I feel that this is one of those things that either you know or you get blindsided by, so give me a minute.

Hot Rod | Rodimus Prime - primarily the G1 Marvel comics version (though this phenomena did overlap a bit into the Dreamwave comics, and the 3H Productions comics) - looks like Primus. I mean, a lot like Primus. And it’s apparently intentional.

Here’s a picture of Primus’ head from the 3H Productions comic Transformers: Universe #1, published in 2003 (he’s the big disembodied head in the centre, but I feel like you’ve figured that out already):

And here’s a picture of Rodimus Prime’s head from IDW’s The Transformers: Regeneration One #81, published in 2012 (I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that his head design has been pretty much made similar across continuities and has had its basics set in stone for decades now):

image

Notice any similarities? Across most continuities, his helm is shaped like this, whether he’s Hot Rod or Rodimus Prime. Sometimes the kibble at the top centre is shaped like the one in the Primus picture above (notably in IDW’s More Than Meets The Eye and Lost Light), but he always has that same piece of kibble. And he always has rounded audios on either side of his helm.

But wait, there’s more!

Here is a picture of Primus from the 3H Enterprise’s BotCon 2000 exclusive comic Terminus (sorry for poorer quality):

And here is a picture of Rodimus Prime from the Marvel US comic The Transformers #43, published in 1988:

Notice the spoiler wings on their backs? The shape of their helms? These are two very different comic panels, done by different artists, by different companies, at different times. And they chose to continue to make them look similar.

Not convinced yet? Here’s Primus from the Japanese continuity’s Generations Selects Special Comic: Super Megatron #3, published by TakaraTomy Mall:

That’s an awfully familiar paint scheme… The TakaraTomy Mall comic is from 2020. This has been a Thing since Transformers comics began, over thirty years ago.

In Japan, there was even a highly limited toy for Primus put out in 2004 as a Lucky Draw toy. It’s a golden recolour of Rodimus Prime. Here is a photo of it pulled straight from the TFWiki Primus page (credits to the contributors TFWiki users FigureGunplaFan and Monzo):

If you’re still not convinced… the question has been posed before, and answers from the sources themselves have been given:

In Marvel Comic’s The Transformers #160, published in 1988, there is a section called Grim Grams, where Grimlock answers questions sent in by fans. I’ve highlighted in red the relevant part:

The text, shortened for relevance, asks:

Dear Grimlock, I have a few questions to ask you. 1) Rodimus Prime looks a lot like Primus (the energy being who became the Creation Matrix). Is this because Hot Rod was changed by the Matrix?

And Grimlock’s answer is:

Ah, yes. I suspected Issue 150′s shocking revelations about the origin of we Transformers would provoke a few comments and suggestions. I’ll do my best to answer what I can. 1) I reckon you’re spot on there, kid. Primus recreated Hot Rod in his own image, calling himself Rodimus Prime.

And, more recently, on the 30th August 2015, someone asked the Ask Vector Prime Facebook page… (link here to the archive page for that on TFWiki):

Why does Rodimus resemble Primus so much?

And the answer was:

Dear Godly Guy,
Nepotism?

Just some food for thought, everyone.
