Sitting Cuties Zangoose (it/any pronoun) which I've modded with a custom furry tail and purple claws to resemble its original sprite!
I unexpectedly had to walk home through a mini dust storm from this field today (and despite covering my face I still got dust in All the face holes, yuck... And made a mess of my very white hoodie...)
And my also-very-white Zangoose who was riding in the side pocket of my backpack got dirty too, oops
Thankfully an easy clean, it didn't need any soap just a thorough rinse. It looked VERY cross about it all though.
Psst, some followers may be interested to know that I spotted another wee flocked thylacine in a cage on eBay, though you may need to ask the seller nicely if they'd post outside of Australia for you.
I don't usually advertise random stuff like this, but seeing as it's apparently a fairly rare find... And you folks seem to LOVE this thing lol :P
i can confirm that your bandanas fit perfectly on medium sized jellycat dragons โค๏ธ๐
Ooh yay, so it does! Looks nice with Dexter colours too! I'm actually surprised I haven't tried that myself haha. I guess I figured it'd be a bit small... Like, the right circumference maybe, but a bit short on a bigger plush. It does work though! Short bandana is a style too!
So I also love thylacines and even though I live in Australia most of the plushies that i can find here are very stiff and made of scratchy fabrics. Iโd seen your Jellycat thylacine ages ago and was inspired but struggled to find a bunny that was the right colour and wasnโt horribly expensive. I found this cheap (but in very used condition) Jellycat kangaroo at a thrift store and knew this was my chance.
I changed the ears, tail, changed the stuffing ratio and added weighted beans, embroidered toes on the paws and sewed on stripes made of faux fur. I even made her a tiny bandana. I think it turned out really well!
Iโve never made a plush from scratch before and I am a self-taught hand sewer so while this was a little scary is was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Thank you for the inspiration and the helpful tutorial you posted.
Oh my gosh this is a fantastic mod, nice work! The kangaroo was such a lucky find, it makes an excellent base. Looks like the face was about perfect already, and the big ears and paws and white tummy look so cute! You apparently had more patience for stripes than I did too, hehe.
Thanks for showing me, love to see some more thylacinification being done heh! (Also, so true, plush companies gotta make more soft, fluffy and cuddly thylacines, in fun styles. So many just have smooth fabric or lack of flop...)
I really want to start giving my plushies personalized necklaces etc like you do! Are there any kits you recommend for that sort of thing?
Not really specific kits, just whatever I happen to find tbh! Have a look at whichever art and craft shops are nearby and see if they have any fun mixed tubs or letter beads in their kids' crafts section... failing that, check eBay and stuff! (Or, if in the UK, Beads Unlimited)
Also, random secondhand jewellery can be pretty nice if you're after a more unique style! You can dismantle it for the beads and restring it to fit your plushie.
That makes sense!
What sort of like. String? Would you suggest? Nothing dyed I'm assuming, don't want to stain the plush if possible.
I haven't personally had that problem with cords before, but that's good to be aware of! It can also be a problem for certain dyed gemstone or wooden beads, or these metallic letter beads I've used (didn't leave noticeable marks on the plushie but I did notice the stuff rubbing off over time). You could maybe test by rubbing the beads hard on a bit of paper.
I mostly like to use elastic cords like these, so it's easy to take on and off, and the knots tie securely too.
Sometimes I'll use these like, hemp cords I think? Depending on the vibe I'm going for. Obviously go nicely nice with the wooden beads they came with!
And these shiny satin-y cords too (I use these ones for bead lizards too). If it's non stretchy you'll wanna have some kind of clasp though, unless you don't mind just tying it straight onto the plushie.
Also, tie securely! Overestimate the length you need so you can still tie it easily. I'll always do a reef/square knot, and if it's particularly slippy cord or I've cut the ends quite short I might put a dab of super glue to be sure. Uh, NOT while it's being worn lol.
Oh, another tip, I like to cut a length of cord and put a clip on one end to stop beads falling off while I thread them, and I can easily swap sides and add/remove beads at both ends. Makes it easier to adjust designs as I go!
Hi!~
I saw the little thylacine joey plush you made and was wondering if you had any advice on making baby animal plushies in general (maybe slightly more cooked haha)?
I have some plush making and pattern drafting experience but am kind of stumped on how to get that "just born" look.
My personal goal would be newborn kittens but insight on any species would be greatly appreciated โจ๏ธ
I love your plush work and that little joey is so cute and unique.
Thanks hehe! Ooh, I've always kinda wanted a properly newborn looking kitten plush. Plenty of kittens out there, but I've never seen one that looks fresh enough! I think plush companies are too afraid to step into that ugly-cute zone haha. Gotta let it be an awkward little weird half-naked mouse thing! A wriggling little grub!
Here are some notes on what would make the perfect baby kitten imo (may apply to other babby too):
- Eyes still closed... (The eyes on my joey are actually a grey pom pom stitched on, with a little stitch over the top to define eyelids, which I think worked well for that ugly puffy fetus look lol. Would be a good method for some baby birds too! But for more developed babies, just a simple embroidered line for a closed eye would be good.)
- Ears tiny and folded and low on the head! Sometimes you can't even see them from the front lol... round head.
- Mouth is kinda big actually.
- Fat round tummy and short little legs
- Paws are furless and pink and they can't sheathe their claws yet. Kind of look more like little mouse hands... you can really see the fingers. I would make them pretty flat with stitched toesies.
- Bright pink around their mouth and tummy too, very new kittens have pretty thin skin so they look especially flushed. Marker/paint/airbrush probably.
- Short, soft fur, ideally a kind of sparse or wispy texture?
- Floppy! Like it can't even lift its head properly yet! Go for a pattern that works well as a beanie, like sprawled on its tummy, and give it a kinda narrow neck and heavy head for maximum patheticness.
- Give it a weird gross little belly button nub lol
- Squeaker....

have you seen the thylacine plush from Wildberry Plush on instagram?
his name is indigo and heโs launching on kickstarter in april!
Oh yes, was wondering when that one would be kickstarting! I'm already watching for it haha. Actually quite glad it was delayed slightly as I'll be able to afford one much more comfortably now compared to the start of the year. Looks like a gorgeous plush, I just hope it'll let me ship here...!
this is so crazy i JUST took a photo of my salt when i saw you got an ask from the other australian who ordered two โ and we got the same bandana?? we are linked by our thylacinesโฆ
here is my salt, liam, with my cat ginny :] i thought it would be sweet for a salt and ginger photo. they are so much softer than i thought they would be and they are so lovely to hold. a perfect floppiness and a lovely little guy to keep in my pocket... iโll take another photo when his brother remy arrives! :] literally this little guy is the perfect stimmy plush. i fell asleep with him in my hand last night. love this guy
Hehehe oh yeah, I forgot they had the same one but it was funny!
Oh hey, and I actually did grab a photo of the two before I packed them up! Same bandana! Same bandana.....
Matching pair of thylacines separated by... Uh. Not as much distance as they could be, I suppose.
Yay, glad you enjoy flip flopping them around heh. I love beanies for that. Also yay for Ginny, a tortie just like my Ellis :)
cowboy jack is here!!!! (this is another of my accounts just in case thereโs any confusion, @holeyplush is one of my side accs) and. Wow. i donโt think i anticipated quite how well-made your plushes were. like i KNEW they were going to be good but your sewing work actually blows my mind (particularly as an amateur plush artist myself). now iโm doubly excited for wheat basket (my cereal thylacine) to get here!! for anyone on the fence about picking up something from leo i would highly HIGHLY recommend that you do whenever what youโre after has a drop!! you wont regret it at all! (and the bandana is so cute iโm dying)
Yeeeah there's the lad! His wheaty friend is on the way so hopefully gets there soon too.
Aaa and thank you so much for the glowing review heehee.... I'm glad you're happy with your guy, have lots of adventures with him!!
Rating various small thylacines on how well they fit as a joey in Artemisia's pouch
If you have recently acquired a Charlie Bears Pathfinder yourself, you'll have noticed their fairly spacious pouch! Wondering if there are any littler thylacines out there that are a good fit? Wonder no more!
(Although uh, good luck finding some of them for sale...)
My undercooked thylacine joey...... Don't know its name or gender yet, it's just the joey.
I made this silly wee thing without a pattern in October 2024 after thinking of the idea with @wolfies-toys (who made their own joey too... it is much cuter and less raw lol)
It has a magnetic mouth, and I made it a tiny dummy using a button, some beads and a plastic ring.
It's really too young to be out of the pouch yet! Until Artemisia came along and provided a pouch, Joe was doing her best with the hood of her cardigan... Now the joey gets two mums, yay :)
