god ur pearls r so good. u draw her so. idk how to describe it but the vibes are perfect

Thank you so much, I'm so happy you like her <33 I missed drawing her so so much...

By the way I haven't really made clear note of it but I'd like to aplogize for the lack of gempearl content lol. It's not just cause I'm into smallidarity, but because gempearl has gained such a big following post-Wild Life that I don't really want to even risk looking at a lot of content of it for my own wellbeing. In the same way that I still really really like desert duo, the subfandoms of a lot of big ships just scare the shit out of me. Being into Gempearl has also stopped me from being able to avoid a certain AU that I've spoken of before and it seriously stresses me out due to personal experiences, like, brings on the desire to drive myself into a river and I'm afraid that's the primary association I've had with Gempearl for a long time and I really don't know how to deal with it, other than to do my best to avoid it. I'll probably draw them again sometime but don't count on it, sorry yuri lovers

ah i see- i misunderstood your criticism of the headcanon haha . im also not a fan of how attached people are to the "curse" idea either but i especially hate when people say the curse has been "passed on" or that anyone else is the "new canary" like thats just not as compelling to me and not how curses work at all really.

maybe i just hate "new canary" talks because i dont like when stuff thats unique to one character gets applied to another lol like get your own thing this is jimmy's.

No worries! I do criticize it but trust me that I wouldn't be drawing something I hate haha, I don't have enough time for that. I 100% agree with you, the fact that people are so attached to this tangible idea that they go as far as to bend canon or pass that curse onto another player is just not something I personally enjoy. I do understand where the appeal comes from and I only hope that a lot of these people will eventually branch out into even cooler imagery and analysis, because I think a lot of them would make banger stuff were they not limited to an idea that they like too much to let go. It's not something I can in good faith fault. At the very least the canary stuff should be unique to Jimmy even if it isn't something I usually agree with on the fandom side of things, to give it to another character does feel like such a disservice and tells me more than anything that a lot of people do only care about the curse and not the characters

Pearl's turn to be creatured. Get mothed idiot

I wasn't thinking of any specific moth, she's a mixture of various different species I thought were neat. I like to headcanon that bug hybrids have a tendency to rub their hands together like flies do to stay clean. Moths don't really do that but I thought it suited Pearl's character, the body language...

if youre not a fan of the jimmy canary headcanon why do you still draw him as a canary /genq

Did I say I wasn't a fan? It's the curse headcanon, I'm not usually a fan of people caring more about the canary curse than Jimmy's character, that's just my personal preference. I have said before that I really like the canary headcanon in a more meta sense as self-referential of how the fandom and other characters treat him

Anonymous asked:

How do Pearl and Joel combat the mindset? /gen

Joel has on multiple occasions defended Jimmy, to him or to others, and wanted to save him from dying first by sacrificing himself in LimL although he never got to. He's also on several occasions voiced belief in Jimmy, eg he believed in and wanted Jimmy to make it to the top 10 and top 5 in Wild Life, and was proud of him when he did well

Pearl on at least one occasion in Limited Life expressed that she believed in Jimmy making it and was saddened by his death

Also only somewhat related to previous (which is why I'm sending new ask instead of reblog) is that if we want a symbol for Jimmy that means 'killing this thing has doomed you all' ALBATROSS ALBATROSS ALBATROSS that's LITERALLY a well documented superstition. If you kill an albatross at sea you have brought misfortune to your entire crew. There's a book/poem and a song about it and everything and it even keeps the avian thing that so many people love going.

Avatar

That's crazy actually because I have thought about it before. Before I started work on my Flightless animatic to Kiwi, I considered "Albatross" by Attalus instead which is really Jimmy to me in a way

Below I typed out my initial idea but actually you know what. On a relisten this song is very Joel about Jimmy so you may as well dismiss it LMAO but yes I very very much approve of Albatross Jimmy

as a HUGE canary Jimmy and coal miner Mumbo lover... there isn't really a reason for it lol. it is genuinely just that Mumbo died consistently after Jimmy twice and now died first, and so he needed a cool title that related to Jimmy's canary title, thus, coal miner was the only option at hand. best explanation i can offer is this video, but, yes, i agree the better interpretation is that all other players are the coal miners. i still like calling Mumbo the coal miner though, he kinda looks like one to me :3

never heard of the Tango as the coal mine(r) one before either

Avatar

LMAO that is SO fair. The analyst in me just tries to figure out the meaning to everything even when there is none because I'm such a sucker for allegories and symbolism myself. Ah well.. but also I guess the canary curse idea also doesn't fit Jimmy to begin with under the belief that canaries were often cared for and saved from dying. But it sure sounds cool and makes for cool imagery doesn't it haha. I really cannot blame people for jiving with ideas like these even if I may not get the appeal as is and try to find meaning somewhere that has none. You're absolutely right though that Mumbo just kinda looks like a coal miner (in most fanon) so I accept it 🫡

Iirc Tango being the coal mine just originally came from him often being fire/blaze coded in fanon. Because coal = fire. Plus the phrase with the symbolism of canary (that's the first time I really remember Jimmy being called the canary of the series too? But I wasn't super into it before DL so if it came before I just hadn't heard it)

Avatar

Aww fuck I erased that crucial element from my mind haha (about the canaries often indeed being cared for). That does change things quite a bit if you view it from that angle... In that case I can see the "Tango is the coal miner" labelling, although he'd certainly be an unwilling one but do what he can to preserve the canary's life and not just wait for it to die? But even then, the canary would have failed its function if it straight up dies in time with the miner instead of showing signs of suffering earlier, and in my opinion Tango is still complicit in the Jimmy ecosystem since he believes in and doesn't combat Jimmy's fate, so I feel like it'd be uncharacteristic for him to believe that the canary could be saved even if he cared for it (think of his quick acceptance that he and Jimmy were just going to die first in DL)

Maybe for some players, it's not so much about them deciding that the canary has to die, but rather the lack of knowledge in that it doesn't have to die, which is where I feel Tango would fit. But with that train of thought, the decision to take the canary down into the coal mine at all is one they still made with the expectation that it would die and help them live

Still lost on Mumbo though. It's not a dynamic that's very prevalent and in fact the most content that there is about them is just about the happenstance of them often dying one after the other, so I can't imagine Mumbo would really care, because I don't think he does. Even in Mounders he was often distrustful and even tried to kill them so I can't imagine he has any care for Jimmy of all people. I guess it is a "Mumbo took Jimmy into the mine without particular care for him, he died and Mumbo was unable to escape in time" type of thought? Which would mean that, again, the canary failed its function, which contradicts the whole canary curse idea, assuming the other players are not also miners

Agh it gets kind of convoluted to think about it too much haha, but the whole "coal miner" spiel does go around a lot so naturally I'm gonna think about it. The miners caring for their canaries historically I guess indeed isn't that relevant for Jimmy but thanks for pointing it out anyway! Because I certainly don't want to spread the false belief that they didn't and actually, the more I think about it, the more frustrating it is that most people in the fandom seem to think this, since the canary curse label came from the explicit belief that the canary always dies

Oh as for the blaze thing. Yeah I guess that does make sense, never considered it to be that simple but I honestly prefer it that way lol

(edited post after the last ask, oops!)

I keep thinking about what that anonymous said "If Jimmy is the canary then (almost) every other player is the coal miner for being complicit in his suffering and bringing him down in the mine with the expectation that he will die before them, for his life has been chosen to be of less value" because that's the only interpretation of the "coal miner" assignment that makes sense to me. I've been informed/reminded that a canary brought into a coal mine doesn't actually have to die and can still fulfill its function, but the whole "canary curse" idea is reliant on the thought that Jimmy WILL and HAS TO die

And now I'm genuinely curious as to why Tango and Mumbo have ever been assigned coal miner specifically? Because Tango died together with him in Double Life? Whilst the canary may not have to die, Tango didn't necessarily try to stop it and in fact expected Jimmy's death instead and quickly accepted it, even if he did care for Jimmy in DL. Did the canary just fail its function and whole reason it's brought down to the mine to begin with by dropping dead at the same time as the miner instead of giving any forewarning? Assuming everyone else isn't also a miner

In Mumbo's case, because of Mumbo's tendency to die second? So the implication is that he took Jimmy down into the mine but failed to leave in time after the canary's death, whilst everyone else remains above ground? In that sense the canary has also failed its function which contradicts the whole canary curse labelling to begin with

Again I'm genuinely curious lol

Also the "Tango is the coal mine" type of thought too. That one I have absolutely no theories for so I'd love to hear any explanation. I guess the coal mine could be taken as a passive factor, but in my mind all the players are already complicit by being passive (except for BigB. That is the only truly passive guy in the series because he lives in his own world and doesn't take to almost anything anyone else says. Although I wouldn't call him a coal mine? He's like. A fly on the wall somewhere completely detached). Not all of them necessarily wish to take the canary down in the mine but it's something that's continued to be done so they just go along with it, it's just the order of things, and they're unaware that the canary's life can be preserved whilst still fulfilling its function, versus people like Joel and Pearl who have said or done things contradicting the general belief of Jimmy's incompetence and explicitly believing in him/wanting him to not die

Your list of cuteness aggression made me suddenly think about utena au smallidarity and im kind of losing it now

I KNOWW!! I'm not personally into making AUs based upon preexisting media and changing the genders of the main leads does mess with some of the core themes, but Utena and Anthy are SO smallidarity. The student council are THE Jimmy ecosystem. It's crazy to me
