Chapter 9 Preview:

With quiet, cautious steps, Nathalie went in, closing the door softly. Even when she approached the bed, Adrien didn’t look up. He didn’t so much as blink to register her presence.

God, what should she do?

With no better ideas, she sat on the edge of the bed, folding her hands in her lap and looking at her feet. Now that she was here, she didn’t know what to say. Maybe he didn’t want her. Maybe he didn’t want anyone.

But maybe that didn’t matter – because he needed someone.

‘Do you mind me being here with you?’ she asked, keeping her voice quiet.

He didn’t reply.

At least that wasn’t a no.

She shuffled a little more onto the bed, forcing words out. ‘I’m so sorry about your mother, Adrien. I can’t begin to understand what you might be feeling. I’m just – I’m sorry.’

For lying.

For putting you through this.

For not telling you sooner about what was happening to her.

Only –

If they’d told him, would it have helped? Or would he imagine he was somehow to blame? After all, Emilie had died to give him life. It wasn’t his fault. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But it was only natural that he might –

‘Nathalie?’ Adrien’s voice startled her.

‘Yes?’

‘Why weren’t you close to your mother?’

The question made her flinch.

But at least he was talking – even if he wasn’t looking at her.

Chapter 12 Preview:

After his morning lesson, Hugo had a free period. With no other plans, he headed into one of the art studios. At this hour, only three other people were in the room. Absorbed in their own work, they didn’t even look up at him when he walked in, or when he hauled an easel out of the storage room and set it up in a corner.

Just the way he liked it.

Earbuds in, he pinned a thick sheet of paper to the easel and pulled his materials out of his bag. Then he settled on a stool and got to work.

Seven sheets of paper later, his hand swiped across the latest page, filling it with rough charcoal marks. Up close, they didn’t look like much. But when he leaned back to get perspective, the face was clear as day, the features implied by white spaces.

His father, the way he’d looked this morning in the kitchen. Washed out, wrung dry, and left hanging, so wrinkled it was hard to imagine him ever regaining his original shape.

Leaning in again, Hugo focused on the eyes, bending them at the corners. Adding faint creases in the surrounding skin – the scars of age, pain, but most of all, laughter.

You’ll come back, Papa. You always do.

On the page, the face seemed to smile at him, grateful for his belief.

1 - Sins of the Father

Eight years after the defeat of Monarch, Adrien has run off with his twin brother Felix to travel the world, to try to 'find himself'. Currently in northeast India, the brothers talk goddesses and do some heavy reflecting.

Slots into All the Missing Pieces but can basically be read as a standalone piece.

Felix smiled. ‘When was the last time you spoke to Marinette?’

Adrien’s face fell, and he looked away. ‘I’ve tried sending a few messages, but the reception’s been non-existent.’

Felix watched him from the side, some idea in his eyes. Like he was thinking about launching into another of his speeches about how this was never meant to be such a long trip. They’d already been to so many places – Thailand, Mongolia, Cambodia…. They could go back anytime Adrien wanted. All he needed to do was say the word.

The trouble was, he didn’t want to go back. Not to the mansion, anyway. Not to the city where Gabriel’s shadow hung at his heels wherever he moved. To a place where he’d been wished into existence without context. Someday, maybe, he’d be ready to reclaim it as home. But right now….
