He'd known when he and his dad had started this that there were going to be times that it hurt. He'd known the weight of the history between them, and how it wasn't just going to go away because his dad finally feeling the same way about him was a dream come true. This is what he had signed on for, something messy and complicated, and it was worth it. It was worth it. They loved each other, and that was enough. It was.

Having Tony around was… weird. Peter knew that what happened wasn't Tony's fault— (Would he have taken you if he didn't know about your brother, his mind whispered.) Peter knew that his brother wasn't the person who had hurt him, but that didn't matter to the stupid prey animal part of his brain that was always on alert for— his— moods.

"It's just when I'm wearing it, for some reason," Peter said, letting Tony take his wrist in hand and turn it this way and that to observe the misbehaving tech. "The release works fine if I'm just testing it on the table." Tony hummed in thought, holding Peter's arm so that the webshooter lay level over his wrist and leaning down to look at it more closely. His thumb stroked absently over the thin skin just past the edge of the webshooter band, and while Peter was able to fight back his shiver, he couldn't help the way his fingers twitched. Thwip!

(I'm curious if you can intuit the context of this given the prompt lmao)

"Almost thirty," he countered. "And the question is, would you use it?" Peter pursed his lips, narrowing his eyes like he wasn't hiding a smile, and he said, "You just want another apartment to decorate."

It was weirdly familiar, in a way. Laying still with the smell of leather in his nose while someone's hands moved over him and he mindlessly pushed down his body's instincts to flinch. Mr. Stark did his best to be gentle, making careful stitches with steady, methodical hands, but it still hurt.

(will I ever actually be able to do a proper one-sentence excerpt, I wonder)

When Toomes finds a stronger argument to keep Peter from meddling in his plans at Homecoming, he figures the Vulture isn't the only thing he can get Peter to keep quiet about— leaving Peter to juggle his relationship with Liz, his abuse at her father's hands, and his lingering hurt over how things ended with Mr. Stark.

The much-delayed chapter five is out!

Bbbbut sadly not the expected conclusion slkdfjlsdk-- I had to split what was intended to be the last chapter in two, so the actual finale is yet to come with chapter six once I finish it and clean it up. Thank you for hanging in there friends! 💖💖💖

It's such an amazing feeling when someone picks up on something in your writing that you 100% intended but didn't think people would notice. Like, YES!! Hello nonnie! I'm not sure what specific flavor of "insecure" you're looking for but you could give these a try:

Refraction by chelicerata: AU Tony where he never became Iron Man after his experience in Afghanistan meets dimension-hopping post-Endgame Peter; a definite fave of mine!

Want for Nothing by pastself: Peter POV so you have to read between the lines for Tony's side of things, but an EXCELLENT exploration of Tony's various Relationship Insecurities through the lens of the two of them coping with the world's reaction to their relationship. Another absolute fave!

only when I hit the ground by Aisalynn: a lovely look at a post-Endgame Tony who made it out alive but not unscathed, and how that impacts how he approaches his relationships (and his will-they-won't-they dynamic with Peter in particular.) 💖💖💖

Expiration Date by LearnedFoot: perfect execution of "pining while dating"-- Tony thinks their relationship is just a fling on Peter's side, and has a lot of feelings about it.

Another Life by InColor: love a good fic that explores the fallout of common tropes-- resurrected Tony has a hard time integrating back into the living world.

the friendly neighborhood by postelectric: it's less that there's a specific focus on his insecurity here and more that it's just a pitch-perfect Tony Stark so there's a general background atmosphere of gentle self-loathing? AU where Tony ghosts Peter after Homecoming, and they meet again as adults post-EG (that Tony survives, worse for wear.)

Rebuild by tuesday: similar vibes to the above! Post-EG Tony (who lived) and how his relationship with Peter develops over time; another Big Fave.
