Feeling down because of gestures at world so I’m compiling something I’m super proud of - my ref sheets!

I’ve got a good rhythm down with my main characters, who get a front and back view and a head detail. Alex and Dimi get even fancier sheets since they’re my mains <3

Lately I’ve been drawing tertiary characters’ sheets, which have been fun to let loose with and add details or exaggerate shapes since I won’t draw them as much.

Kali and Armin’s sheets are so ooooold, I need to update them to better fit my current artstyle! Plus Armin’s got new lore things I need to add

And I’m proud of The Hunt lineup sheet, even if I’m annoyed at myself for not quite nailing early 2000s. This was mostly to show height differences in The Hunt, but I’ve been using it as a ref sheet for the cast!

My modern OC’s old sheets are still fun too!! I should make new ones with their 2000s looks… and properly study some clothing -_-

THE TWINS

Ref sheet for more tertiary characters - this time, Velos’s older twin brothers, Alecri and Haster! (and swordswoman Avery)

Alecri is almost exact opposite of his father, King Andor; he’s happily married to a foreign royal who courted him, and has young children he dotes on and cherishes. He lives in that foreign country, and hasn't been home to Asabov in a few years.

Haster is out fighting in King Andor’s name, claiming territory or defending his honor or whatever Father asks of him. He was nearly hanged and now doesn’t speak much, so his right hand Avery does most of the talking. The two are very dedicated to each other in an ace-coded relationship :3

Also, continuing the speed-themed name puns for the royal kids; Alecri is alacrity, Haster is haste! Avery is a flash pun; there’s a recent alias of flash named Avery Ho

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start draw comics?

  • Read comics. Try to absorb the layouts and lettering - there’s so many ways to tackle it! Also even in published comics you’ll see that the art is messy and scrungly and you can take that as permission to be messy and scrungly too.
  • Comics are about efficiency and Good Enough. If you try to make each panel a masterpiece you’ll be there forever. Reasons why I mostly do simple pencil comics.
  • Start small. Do a scene or gag comic at a time. Get a feel for the medium and all the steps you have. If there’s a step you hate, find a way to emphasize the steps you love. EG I hate laying down flat colours but love shading, so I make my page form comics painterly greyscale with a gradient map to spruce them up.
  • Thumbnail!!!!! Figure out your page or panel layout before you start pencils. It can just be chicken scratch and sticken figures but it will help make sure there’s a clean line of action carrying the viewer from panel to panel and that your lettering fits.
  • don’t skimp on lettering. you can have beautiful artwork but if your dialogue is time new roman on half transparent ellipses or somehow unreadable it’s gonna drag everything else down. Blambot is a great source for free and affordable comic fonts and even has guides from an industry pro.
  • There are a huge bajillion elements to making comics but once you’ve made like, literally 100 pages you’ll start just intrinsically knowing things like the 180 rule, how to place a speech bubble when the first speaker is on the right, and that you can draw one nice background and then have gradient colour blocks carry you through most of the page/scene. And then you’ll still keep learning. Always learning!

LOTS of example stuff under the cut, mostly for lettering and layouts:

More sequential art for The Hunt, I’m enjoying drawing it in order!

Nell managed to escape the Doctor with just a few cuts and bruises, and runs to the toughest guy he knows will believe him - TY!

TY nearly transforms into a werewolf at the sight of his friend’s bloody appearance. Dylan, who’d crashed at TY house hoping for a chill evening, is slightly concerned for Nell, but is more annoyed he’s interrupting her TY Time.

Meet Celeon

Future Queen of Asabov, Cel is rather high and mighty about her importance, and is more than looking forward to the throne that she knows she will excel on.

As the eldest child of King Andor, she has the throne of Asabov by birthright, which sours her relationship with her three other siblings, chiefly the youngest, Velos. Cel is nothing but kind to him, and sometimes Velos warms up to her, but when she gets more attention from King Andor the jealousy comes back

I sketched her, the middle twins, and Velos back in October in a shadowy portrait!
