Like if a white person from the American suburbs who had doctors for parents says "the suburbs are set up in a way that's designed to alienate the people within them from their neighbors growing up there can be an incredibly lonely isolating experience" and you respond with "shut up you had everything you ever wanted growing up" you are sort of pretending that this asocial way of living we've set up based on harmful ideas like castle doctrine and individualism is in some way desirable for someone when the reality of the situation is that everyone is miserable.
Oh boy this is popping off. But I just want to put on this post that this isn't just about the example that I used this is also when people get mad at you for complaining about aspects of living in America because other people are getting bombed by America how dare you, or when (usually neurodivergent) white people complain about how wasp monoculture is high key hostile to be raised in, or when people with middle class jobs complain about the shit their boss pulls, or any other number of situations in which a relatively privileged potential ally talks about the unique ways the oppressive systems we're looking to overthrow effects them negatively. Like yes sure if you have a minimum wage job it's annoying to listen to someone with a salary and benefits say "my boss treats me like shit and my company is doing x evil thing" but if you're in that situation and you're actually down for the cause instead of just here to play oppression Olympics, you want to gain allies in this fight by saying "have you considered unionizing" instead of pushing people away by saying "shut up at least you can afford rent"

Should I put 10 dollars into food or into education and development in Gaza?
This is a real question, not just theory or philosophy… It’s a question that confronts me every day, and I found myself compelled to answer it clearly.
Today in Gaza, people are hungry… but also, people are lost. There’s a young graduate sitting on the rubble without even a laptop to work on. There’s a university student studying by candlelight, with no internet to continue his education. There’s an engineer who, instead of building, is searching for a box of aid to feed his family.
Do you know what that means? It means the occupation doesn’t want to kill us with bullets; it wants to kill us with ignorance, with helplessness, by turning us into mere people waiting for a bag of flour, waiting for assistance… and that’s the biggest crime against us. Today, we all in Gaza need a bite to eat… but what about tomorrow? Am I going to rely on others for the rest of my life just to survive? And that’s the question that occupies my mind the most!! Or should I be able to provide for myself and my family and rebuild my life?
That’s why, instead of letting the 10 dollars be a meal for one day, let it be an investment in a student who will rise from the rubble, who will learn, and who will be able to provide for his own food forever.
Let it be a share of empowerment, not just so Gaza can survive one more day… but so Gaza can rise, stand, and endure forever.

This was the museum I went to often in my childhood. I'm no longer able to visit unless I visit family, but this place holds a special place in my heart.
As stated in the article, they hold around 7 million artifacts- many of which are orphaned fossils, with the museum taking in collections that otherwise would have been trashed.

It's really gratifying to see people sharing this and commenting about buying/donating; the Museum of the Earth really is a gem and the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) that runs it does critical work in collecting and preserving "orphan" fossil collections. To explain/expand on a couple things, the financial straits they're in started a couple years ago when a $30 million donation fell through for reasons unknown. They severely restructured and downsized in 2023 to keep things going (including dramatically reducing staff and re-homing about 70 animal ambassadors from the Cayuga Nature Center which is also run by PRI, to ensure the animals got consistent care), but they are now in a critical spot with the mortgage and may be foreclosed on soon.
If you're at all in the Finger Lakes area, I recommend dropping in on a weekend - they've got an incredible mastodon skeleton, a new Blaschka glass specimen exhibit, and a full right whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling; they do Fossil ID Saturdays where you can bring in what you've found and get an expert opinion, and they do mask-required days regularly as well.
as incredible as it is that a ceasefire agreement has finally—finally—been announced, it hasn't come into effect yet & won't until the 19th. in the next 4 days, fuck knows what israel is gonna do in retaliation for being forced to step down from their genocidal campaign. and even after the ceasefire comes into effect, it changes very little about the material realities on the ground.

Abdullah’s wife Intisar is suffering from an infection due to severe environmental contamination by the IOF. The targeted destruction of Gaza’s waste management infrastructure leaves displaced people like Intisar exposed to viral, bacterial, and fungal infections which are otherwise rare. Currently the infection is affecting Intisar’s hands, but if she does not receive treatment soon, the infection will spread throughout her body.
The treatment will cost $1,000 USD. We are still trying to raise funds for Abdullah’s liver procedure, but progress has been very slow, and Abdullah has lost hope. He wants to focus on getting his family help before himself. Therefore we have a new temporary goal of $5,918. We will return to our initial temporary goal after this one is met.
