"Thank you for all the help. I don't know how we'd have gone through that without you two."

Kara smiled at the familiar face, who smiled back. There was a comfortable silence between them very briefly. "Hey, uh..." Kara let out, quietly. "Before you go, can I ask you something?"

Lena from Earth 13 just nodded keeping the soft smile. Kara didn't know why she wanted to ask that or maybe she was just afraid of admitting she wanted to hear whatever was the answer from Lena, even if that wasn't her Lena.

"Your families' history on your world is even more complicated than mine and Lena's in this one. How did- how... how did you two-" Kara was nervous. That wasn't a simple question about some other people. Something in her wanted to know if there was hope for whatever she was feeling for her Lena.

"Did you lie to her too?" Lena asks pointedly.

Kara-93 straightens, returning Lena's glare with a steady gaze. "Yes."

The admission, unadorned by reasons and justifications, surprises Lena. She scowls.

"And she just forgave you?"

Kara-93 shakes her head. "No," she says solemnly. "She didn't."

Lena's brow furrows. "But, you--"

"I wouldn't have deserved her forgiveness, even if she had granted it. The wound is still there... but even on a fault line, cities can be rebuilt."

"Sounds... precarious." A single quake would have the potential to tear everything back down.

Kara nods. "We're mindful, to not repeat past mistakes. It's not easy, but..." Kara-93 trails off as her wife comes into view. "It's worth it."

---

After the pair disappear through the transmat portal, Lena feels... adrift. She retreats to the lab that once was Alex's, now ostensibly hers. She can't say she's surprised when Supergirl joins her some time later, but neither can she say she's altogether bothered by the woman's presence.

"I spoke to Lena," Supergirl starts, hesitantly. "Before she left."

"Seeking absolution, no doubt." There, Lena stops, suddenly tired. "I spoke to Kara as well. About how they found their way back. It wasn't.... entirely without benefit."

She looks up just in time to see Supergirl's features lift with hope.

"We're nowhere close to that," Lena says sharply. But as those hopeful features fall, something inside Lena shifts. "Yet."

The belated addition catches Supergirl by surprise, if the crinkle between her eyebrows is any indication. Lena sighs.

"I do miss you, Kara. Seeing them together, like that, made that all too clear. But you hurt me. Deeply. I may not see a way past that now, but that doesn't mean there isn't one."

Kara's features are heavy when Lena finishes and looks up at her, but softer than they were before. Understanding, in a way they hadn't been a moment before. She nods.

"A journey," Kara concludes. "Not a race."

"You can't fix this," Lena warns, Kara-93's words echoing in her ears. "But with time, perhaps we won't have to. We'll just..."

"Build around it," Kara offers.

"It won't be easy..."

Taking a step forward, Kara nearly extends her hand, but seems to think better of it, instead curling her fingers into a fist.

"I'm not looking for easy, Lena."

Lena believes it. For all her own hurt, she knows Kara, and Lena knows the lies must have taken their toll. For all their ease together, they have never truly been an easy thing.

"Not an ending, then," Lena says.

Kara shakes her head in agreement. "No. Just... something different."

Lena shrugs. "Something different."

With a nod, Kara begins to edge backwards towards the door. Before she crosses the threshold, however, she pauses.

"I'll come," she says softly. "Whenever you call."

Lena offers a final nod.

"I know."

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied Illuminate the no’s on their vacancy signs If there’s no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I’ll follow you into the darkMiya Folick - I Will Follow You Into The Dark

Kara lies broken and silent in Lena’s arms. Lena feels outside her own body, the impossibility of the reality before her too much for her mind to comprehend. Yet she had envisioned this, hasn’t she? So many times before, she’s imagined Kara getting caught up in some sort of trouble, Luthor or reporting or invasion or otherwise, and not coming out the other side.

But it isn’t Kara in her arms, it’s Supergirl. The Girl of Steel.

It’s Kara.

It can’t end like this. Lena’s distantly aware of tears running down her cheeks, of Lex’s taunting in ears, but it’s all but drowned in the roar of disbelief. This can’t be happening.

“Kara,” Lena issues, her tongue slow and unwieldy. “Kara, please wake up. You’re okay, it’s gonna be okay, just please– open your eyes.”

But no matter how hard Lena shakes her, Supergirl’s eyes remain shut, Kara’s bruised and battered body limp on the forest floor.

“No,” Lena gasps, bundling Kara close to her chest. “No, no, no, no!”

Panic surges now. Not of Lex, who she senses stalking his way towards them, but of the future suddenly laid out before her. A friendship rekindled, only to be snuffed before they fully healed. With Lena’s own wails of condemnation still ringing in her ears, and Kara’s anger still hot between them.

They haven’t talked yet, not really. As though they’d mutually agreed that the difficult part can wait, wait until Lex and Nyxly were stopped, they’d simply… been. A taste of what they’d had, but still tentative, fragile for the unspoken left between them.

This can’t be it.

Something blooms in Lena’s chest, but the sob that escapes her doesn’t relieve the pressure building within her.

“Kara, please,” she begs, through tears and snot and the hot, untameable fire burning within her ribs. “Please… stay– augh!”

Pain tears through her, and she cries out from the surprise of it. Suddenly, she can feel… everything. The threads of roots beneath the packed dirt of the forest floor, the thrum of Lex’s kryptonite lasers charging, the song of moonlight shining above.

The moment Kara’s ragged breaths cease.

“No!” Lena howls. The pressure in her chest swells, until it snaps like a bubble bursting. In an instant, a force like a hurricane blazes through the clearing, blowing Lex from his feet and making tree trunks snap and crackle from the force.

Lena screams. She’s nothing more than a conduit, an outlet for all the energy of the universe. It floods through her and out… out to the wilds, to Lex. To Kara.

When the flow of power ebbs, Lena sags, all but collapsing on top of Kara. The last thing she sees before she passes out is pale blue eyes flickering open. Then, she sees nothing more.

Lena wakes to the sound of slow, methodic beeping. It’s a sound she feels within her very body, and she realizes it’s a monitor for her own heartbeat. Prying her eyes open, she registers the tower’s medical bay around her, only to then realize she’s not alone. Kara sits at her bedside, hero’s suit exhanged for jeans and soft sweater.

“You’re…” Lena’s croak trails off, but Kara understands her well enough.

“I’m all right,” she confirms softly. “Thanks to you.”

Her gaze is solemn and intent, and it studies Lena carefully.

“You saved me.”

“I don’t know how,” Lena whispers. Her throat aches, perhaps from screaming, perhaps burnt from the heat of whatever had coursed through her body. Tears fill her eyes. “I couldn’t lose you.”

Not after everything. Being denied Kara so long, first by her own doing then by the Phantom Zone, Lena couldn’t let Kara slip away again.

“Lena…” Kara sounds suddenly uncertain. “I don’t know what to say.”

“Don’t leave me. Not again,” Lena pleads hoarsely. “Promise me.”

Kara’s lips thin into a smile. It’s a promise they both know she might not be able to keep. But Kara offers it anyways.

“I promise,” she vows. Then she cracks a true grin. “You’re stuck with me.”

Exhaustion seizes Lena then, and she’s unable to resist it’s inexorable pull into sleep. Kara squeezes her hand.

“I’ll be here when you wake up. I promise.”

This time, when Lena closes her eyes, for the first time in a long while, she knows true peace.

"Thank you for all the help. I don't know how we'd have gone through that without you two."

Kara smiled at the familiar face, who smiled back. There was a comfortable silence between them very briefly. "Hey, uh..." Kara let out, quietly. "Before you go, can I ask you something?"

I wish I had the talent make video edits or gifs with these two. They’re so beautiful together. I can imagine them teaming up to fight stuff and like, it’s all about hope. The House of El emblem means hope itself and Emma and her family try to give people hope on a daily basis. Come on, just imagine: Comics and Fairy Tales coming together. <3
