I firmly believe that my (Chinese) mom is more Italian than my (Italian) dad. She earned multiple advanced degree in Italian history and studied abroad to learn how to speak the language fluently. She fought for it. The hell did he ever do? He grew up eating slightly more pasta than other kids in the United States. He was born into it. Fucking nepo Italian

Stop Asking Kids What They Want to be When They Grow Up

Everyone can remember a time in their life when they were they were asked the age long question “What do you when you grow up?”. At surface level it seems a harmless question. Just something your uncle asks you at family gatherings when there’s little else to discuss. However this question constantly drilled into minds of children can affect a child negatively psychologically.

The reason this question is more harmful that seems, is due to the unnecessary pressure it puts on kids. For example, the question puts pressure on kids to find an answer before they know who they are and what their interests are. This can limit the amount of willingness to change and explore more options because they may think that they already know. In addition to that when kids (especially young ones) are asked this question they almost always favor successful careers such as astronaut or lawyer while not considering their personal interests and motives.

This question can also harm mental well-being by putting pressure on kids to have everything figured out when they may not have a clear path in mind. When the answer lacks clarity it can contribute to anxiety and stress.

I spoke to classmates about this topic and they had similar viewpoints, one classmate said that this question causes kids to feel the need to plan their entire life at six. They also talked about how when you answer this question you’re often trying to please the other person so you say you want to be an astronaut, lawyer, etc. because you want that person to think more highly of you. Other classmates agreed that sometimes when they were asked this question when they were younger they felt pressure to please the other person.

Next time your talking to someone and you want to know their interests try asking them what excites them or what their favorite subject is in school at the moment, or the impact they want to have on the world. These questions don’t make kids choose a specific field but instead lets them investigate their interests.

Stop pressuring kids into choosing a career early and instead foster their passions. Doing this can help them not limit themselves, and not pressuring them into choosing a career based on monetary motivation.

Do you remember a time when you were asked what you wanted to be when you grow up and you weren’t sure how to answer? Put it into the comments!

This is my fan translation of Kairi Seidouitusei Shougai no Chiguhagu na Hibi by Tokin! I love this manga so much. It’s a wonderful autobiography about DID and a representation with a tone we don’t usually get in English. Tokin-sensei gave me permission to translate the prologue and share it with an English audience because I know so many people would want to read it! I am not going to translate the entire text, but I do really really want to encourage people to submit it in this month’s Seven Seas interest survey!! Please help support Tokin-sensei’s wonderful work!

(Submitting with the Japanese title I wrote above or a link to this post would be best for clarity, my English title is not a literal translation)

Tokin-san has a new book about dissociative disorders coming out!! Get a copy if you can! 🩷
