Rewatched squid game s1 and noticed something. Gi-hun's daughter was born on 06.08. (68). Sae-byeok's number was 67. Call me delusional, but that show HAS used numbers to symbolize relationships between players. Sae-byeok is Gi-hun's adopted kid idc
I lowkey have a love-hate relationship with thangyu. I'm just so tired of people centering Nam-gyu's character around Thanos. It's like he got feminized so bad people started treating him like female characters used to be treated in mainstream media (that is, making their existence about the male characters). I've seen someone say they think Nam-gyu only voted O because of Thanos. That comment had more than a thousand likes btw. And look, I think it's funny how the misogynistic character gets feminized, but SO many fans don't even acknowledge his misogyny. And it's not like he even exists to witness it. Some people need to stop using feminism as an excuse and admit it's a kink.
Nam-gyu's inferiority complex
I was trying to find moments where Nam-gyu's superiority/inferiority complex comes through, but I feel like so much was lost in translation to English. Like, ohhh, that's why almost no one in the fandom characterizes him that way?
Unfortunately I don't speak Korean, but I've watched season 2 in Russian and then in English dub (I'm horrible with subtitles only), and the Russian one just really made him look way more insecure ig?
For example, the scene in mingle where Min-su asks Nam-gyu about what happened to Gyeung-su, Nam-gyu doesn't just get mad because Min-su talks to him as if they were friends, he gets mad because Min-su acts as if they were equals. Min-su is the only one Nam-gyu considers as less and who (mostly) acts like he's less. He needs Min-su because that's the only person he feels actually superior to.
He tries to do the same with Se-mi (mainly because she's a woman and he's a misogynist), but she's morally stronger and more independent than him. She's also the only one who calls out his weaknesses directly. When he kills her, he says something along the lines of "You think you're better than me?", "Am I a joke to you?".
Thanos is the only one who dismisses Nam-gyu and gets away with it. I think it's mainly because Thanos has influence and drugs Nam-gyu needs. I mean, Nam-gyu was literally managing a club for a living. He knows how to use celebrities for his own image/benefit. He's never outwardly aggressive towards Thanos, but you can tell the disrespect bothers him. In the scene after Thanos' death, he says that Thanos has always "looked down" on him. In English, he just says that Thanos took him for an idiot.
Nam-gyu feels inferior to others, so he tries to overcompensate by acting superior with the ones who take it. But he's also not stupid. When he sees that a person has power, he takes a step back. I think it's interesting how he's been respectful to guards, like saying 'thank you' when they give them food or not letting Thanos jump Myung-gi, so they won't get in trouble.
Idk, I feel like that's my favorite part about his character, and I wish more people would talk about it.
How I think Dae-ho and Nam-gyu will interact in s3 because they will. TRUST.
I have two ideas. The only thing that really connects them now is Myung-gi. It will probably come to a confrontation since A) Dae-ho has shown support for Myung-gi in mingle, B) Dae-ho offered him protection in case Thanos and Nam-gyu would bother him, C) Nam-gyu hates Myung-gi's guts for obvious reasons. Not only did the guy scam him, but he also killed his alleged best friend. On drugs, Nam-gyu might make more impulsive decisions and will probably try to bully or kill Myung-Gi. That's when Dae-ho will come to protect Myung-gi.
I feel like they still might find common ground, though. Let's not forget that Dae-ho voted O the first time. Then, when Jung-bae voted O, he revealed he was considering doing the same back there. He will definitely feel guilty for not bringing the ammunition. This doesn't help with the fact that he hates being seen as a coward. What I'm trying to say is that he's in an incredibly vulnerable state now. The person who has been acting like a father figure to him died because of his fear. Maybe there will be a final push that will make him vote O and somehow get on Nam-gyu's good side.
They're both anxious people who try to act brave/unbothered. Nam-gyu does it because of his inferiority complex, Dae-ho because of his father issues. Nam-gyu copes with drugs, but what has Dae-ho got now?
