there’s lots of cis people whose know that “terfs are bad” and know that they are supposed to say “that terfs are bad,” yet have extremely shallow understandings, or misunderstandings, of cissexism and transmisogyny. it’s a bit useless to be vehemently opposed to terfs if you aren’t actually using critical thinking to understand more complex incidences of transmisogyny than a simple statement of opposition to a widely agreed-upon ‘boogeyman’ of transmisogyny.
you have to acknowledge that the majority of people who espouse, practice, and perpetuate transmisogyny and transphobia are not terfs. that’s one particular group with some very specific manifestations of transmisogyny and transphobia, and there are multitudes of other ways that transmisogyny expresses itself, ways in which it is visible to trans women, than just the ones that terfs are involved in.
people can perpetuate transmisogyny while ostensibly being against it. you can do it, others can do it, anyone can do it. saying that you’re anti-terf is not going to make you immune to perpetuating transmisogyny and it is not going to guarantee that you will understand or notice subtle, insidious, coded, and other nuanced incidents and indicators of transmisogyny.
it is good to proactively and thoughtfully seek critical understanding of marginalized groups that you are not a part of. that is important in order to build meaningful communication and solidarity across demographic lines.
