we should definitely all be more critical of things in general but sometimes when certain people say ‘be critical of the media you consume’ they seem to be specifically referring to wanting people to make a public performance of self flagellating and loudly denouncing every minorly bad aspect of their interests, which seems to be less about thinking critically and more just about this weird sense of wanting people to Confess Their Sins

#!!!!#this#being aware of every single bad thing in the world is not doable#ppl can enjoy things while also knowing there are aspects that you should be critical about#just bc someone watches a show that had 1-2 prejudiced jokes in it doesnt mean they’re prejudiced too#there isn’t any piece of media that is morally pure bc everyone has different morals

disability advocacy went wrong when it became about inspiration porn and “differently abled” and savants. its incredible that that guy with no legs did a triathlon but your sister with no legs will not and she doesnt need prosthetics or five hour training days to deserve respect and compassion and accommodations. its incredible that that autistic guy can look at a city from a helicopter for an hour and then draw the entire detailed skyline from memory when he lands but your autistic friend cannot and they dont need to have a special Autism Power to deserve respect and compassion and accommodations. 

activism framed around “we are just as CAPABLE” means that when people genuinely are less capable they are left behind. activism framed around “we are just as WORTHY” is fundamental to radical compassion.

#!!!!!!#people focus on making others part of the standard that society imposes instead of focusing on the actual cause of the problem#you shouldn’t care if disabled people are capable or running marathons or working or lifting heavy weight or solving complex math questions#all of them should have the right to housing food water hygienic produts and respect#regardless of what they can and cant do
