It took me some time but I think I finally figured out what helps me stay happy with my art and what works and doesn't work for me so I have some tips that may be obvious to some but maybe helpful to others in case you ever felt unhappy with your art:
today marks george harrison’s birthday! (or at least the one he celebrated iykyk) unless ur autistic, u probably won’t understand how much of ur identity and perception of the world comes from ur special interests. the beatles and specifically george harrison got me through my last year of school and sixth form college and i’ll carry those life lessons with me forever!
we hold ourselves in higher regard than our historical counterparts but 150 years after fanny and stella (pictured) were arrested and charged for cross-dressing, we continue to see trans people villainised and scapegoated.
i grew up in essex like fanny and stella did, it was an intense environment with expectations to fit the mould. it took a while to unpack but its possible - and logical, to understand that modern, western gender ideas are so limited. i fail to see how trump, a man 3 times my age, has yet to learn that too.
it is not hyperbolic to say that trans people have always existed. Our modern day idea of ‘transgender’ can be found all through western history, like but also within indigenous cultures, up to the modern day. many other cultures also celebrated and accepted gay people (who inherently subvert gender norms) till colonisation “intervened”. it is not a stretch to say that condemning transness is thinly veiled white supremacy.
our modern day also sparks comparisons to section 28 in the 80s and it’s very scary to think where the future will lead us as conservatives continue to make trans people enemy number one. i’m thinking of queer people in the US right now and compel everybody to remain vigilant and keep resisting the hatred. and all though it doesn’t happen quickly, change does come - we have seen it pass before. if history shows us anything it’s that in 50 years we will condemn the 2020s for its rampant hatred, it’s just a shame people can’t catch up sooner. please hold on for better days friends 🏳️⚧️💘
wip of @donmarwarehouse ‘s great comet of 1812 that i was lucky enough to see last week!! it’s all still sinking in but i have many thoughts about it and definitely recommend it! ik it’s sold out but if it ever gets a west end transfer🤞🏻definitely check it out!! 💫
i had so much fun seeing a show i love come to life in front of my eyes, the cast are all incredible and perfectly suited to their roles! they all seem so fun and this seems like such a cool experience to be a part of! can’t wait to see it again soon :)
this morning, i woke up to news, no theatre fan would dare to dream of.. all 5 members of the main hadestown original broadway cast are coming to the west end for a short run next year. when i tell you my jaw has never dropped so low. it’s truly surreal. i really hope i can get tickets! but my god, who would’ve ever even conceived of this happening? i don’t even know if this has happened in theatre history before? london will be so lucky to have them and i won’t stop crying about it till then!! this is like the biggest thing that can happen to an english person with a hadestown special interest 😭 it’s certainly making the winter slog feel more bareable! i cannot wait for spring, and eva, reeve, andre, patrick and amber to come again 🫶🏻
