A Hundred Days vs. Epiphany
I just saw SG-1 3.17 'A Hundred Days' for the first time and couldn't help comparing it to SGA 2.12 'Epiphany'.
In both episodes, Jack / John is trapped on a somewhat 'primitive' planet, basically forced to integrate with the local population for a few months. There’s also some form of romance subplot in both. To me, the overall situation feels very similar.
But boy, do they cope differently.
Jack, within 3 months:
- Has mostly accepted that he's never being saved.
- Gave up on digging up the gate.
- Is fully integrated into the community, accepted and liked by all.
- Is fine with throwing away all his clothes and other stuff from Earth?!?!
- Thinks about starting a family with the new woman he's dating? It's kind of implied she might be pregnant when he leaves???
- When he gets 'rescued,' she says, 'You must be very happy to be going home,' to which he replies, 'No, I’m not.'
John, within 6 months:
- Actually says he’s depressed. Doesn’t shave (while some of the other men there clearly do, so it’s not a technology issue).
- Wears his belt, sweat band, watch and any piece of clothing he still has from home every single day.
- Keeps searching for a way out until the end.
- Only half-heartedly tries to integrate (in Tao of Rodney, he basically says he didn’t learn much about meditation at all).
- Doesn't even tell the people he lives with when he leaves the village. Teer says he was 'gone for over a day.'
- Teer is his romance, though it's very one-sided. She keeps hitting on him, and he looks vaguely interested at best, and mostly like he can’t be bothered. (She's like 'life here is not entirely without its pleasures 😉😏' and he's like '🤷♂️')
- On his last day there, she basically talks him into having sex with her by saying she had a vision about it. (Okay, this part might be a bit problematic...)
- When rescued, he says 'What the HELL took you so long???'
Honestly, I don’t know what point I’m making here...
Maybe that Jack adapted to his new life ridiculously fast?
Or that John’s a dramatic potato who refused to adapt at all?
Either way, the contrast is funny to me.
With all the uniforms being generally the same in Atlantis, they missed out on doing some great clothes swap gags. Because you just know there were mornings when people were running late and didn’t realize they grabbed the wrong jacket until someone absolutely roasted them for it.
“Oh, Colonel Sheppard, you’re joining the science team for the day?”
“Rodney, since when have you been American?”
“The infirmary’s down the hall, Radek, this is the science lab.”
“Parrish, I cannot believe they’re letting you join the military.”
I just think they missed out on a gold mine.
That sounds funny... especially if one of them showed up wearing a wraith jacket or something 😂
If they wanted Michael to be a villain they shouldn’t have had Atlantis do ambiguously ethical experiments on him, gaslight him about it, and then have him bring Carson back. Michael Kenmore the Wraith they could never make me hate you
I hate him for what he did to Teyla, what he put her through :(
Plus ya know... the galaxy wide genocide...
Listen he was going through some stuff…
Leadership 101: Courtesy of Colonel Jack O'Neill
Following some conversations I have been having with mutuals, I was thinking about what Jack O'Neill can teach all budding leaders out there and what I, as a leader of a sometimes scarily brilliant team of techies while not having a techie bone in my body, absolutely love about his character!
- Lead from the front, retreat from the back: When searching new planets, take point, and when running for the Gate, ensure your team gets through first.
- Trust your team! You hire some of the most intelligent people on the planet; trust them to do their job.
- Know when you were wrong and admit it! Maybe you made a call that didn't pan out, or maybe you told a certain archaeologist to shut up when they were asking relevant questions.
- Don't get lost in the details; focus on the strategy: You don't need to know how every doohickey works, you just need to know that what your team are doing will achieve your plan.
- Know when to let smart people be smart: You have Sam Carter on your team for cryin' out loud - give her room to work!
- Take time out and encourage your team to take time out: Check that your workaholic team are exercising self care and taking time out; then set the example and go fishing.
- Show empathy and let your team members lean on you when needed: Sometimes, your team member might just need a hug or a shoulder to lean on.
- Plan but be ready to adapt: Have a plan A, but be prepared for plan B, C, and sometimes plan F, as we are all....
- Be resilient and optimistic in the face of adversity: You've been captured by Goa'uld, you're cut off from the Gate, and the Replictors are on the loose, but you can still crack a joke and make your team smile.
- Accept that as a leader, you sometimes have to make the call, and they may not like it: The chain of command is there for a reason, and in the end, your team will always look to you to make the final call. They don't have to agree with it, but they trust you because of all the work you put into 1 through 9.
Did I miss anything? Love to hear your thoughts 😃
stargate atlantis knocks it out of the park by having the lead character be literally just some guy. he was just oneill’s ride to base. a flying cab driver who basically immediately got sent to another galaxy to explore other worlds because he’s the specialest boy and the only one who can make intergalactic siri work. he doesn’t even know what a stargate is
