Makoto, Aira, Kohaku, Sora and Mitsuru were filming a "desert island experience" program and they were allowed to bring one thing with them. Others brought items (or in Kohaku's case, nothing) but Mitsuru took... Adonis. :D Because he's "strong and seems to know a lot about desert islands". That was smart move, ngl. ๐Ÿ˜„

Surfing Ocean reference! ๐Ÿ˜„ Adonis said he's not sure if he knows that much but was shipwrecked once. (that time when Undead got stranded on a desert island and Adonis knew what to do, Rei was useless and harassed by bats and Kaoru cried (again))

That "start a new life" thing is funny to me because I have a friend who used to "start a new life" every other week. She stopped drinking coffee and called it "starting a new life" and that kind of stuff. And then she relapsed and soon "started a new life" again... ๐Ÿ˜‚

Now that Altered is on EN, I want to talk a little more about how it made me like Rei again and sympathize with him and appreciate his character. I used to like Rei quite a lot but then things started to annoy me, mostly fans' perception of him I guess... Anyway!

Then Altered happened, and more specifically Of Heaven and Hell episodes 22-24 where Rei and Tsumugi talk. It's a great conversation. And I really felt for Rei there.

Specifically this. (He says the same thing in Crossroad anime but it was released after this)

Rei has always helped others and taken care of things. Commendable but it's known that people with Good Girl Syndrome easily burn out. Just like Rei did.

No one ever asked if he was okay but even if they had, he would've said he's fine and it's no trouble to do what he was asked to. Reading this was like looking into mirror. It's really frustrating, hah.

This also made me sad, how Rei thought he didn't deserve any "selfish" act. And how it was for escape, not wholly for enjoyment. And what he perceived his "station" in life to be. Typical of people who had to take responsibility as young. And of older siblings, how they often have to be more mature, sensible.

Rei had gone to really dark place but this sentiment stands even when you hope some less extreme external force makes you break off from it.

Characters don't need to be like you for you to feel for their struggles but this time the relatability made me look at Rei again. And how he has acted after War to keep himself safe and sane with his feeble vampire grandpa act. Yeah, it's funny, and I like his funny lines. But knowing the background makes it a little bit sad too. And the fact that he is still actively monitoring himself. I don't remember which story/stories it was but he has said something along the lines of he can't let himself start saving everyone all the time again. I feel that too.

So yeah, Rei is actually a great character.
