See, the word "hamburger" comes from "Hamburg steak," the name for the ground beef patty which is the central feature. Over time, the name was first shortened to "burger" and then combined with other words to describe different toppings (cheeseburger, bacon burger) or patties made from something other than beef (bison burger, turkey burger, veggie burger). But the patty itself, regardless of component, has remained a constant.

So a fried chicken breast on a bun, while a perfectly acceptable sandwich (except the one above looks like it might be Chik-fil-a, which is unacceptable for non-sandwich related reasons), is not a burger. Likewise pulled pork sandwiches, Arby's roast beef deals, sloppy joes, etc. are not burgers.
