I am pleased to share this illustration, the frontispiece for the Suntup edition of American Gods. Inspired by Edward Hopper’s iconic painting Nighthawks, I wanted to pay tribute to this mythical diner while transporting it to the other side of the mirror, in a strange and dreamlike atmosphere.

Backstage – Ink, graphite, gold leaf (four shades), silver leaf, hydrangea petals on Arches cream vellum paper.

The creative process behind the illustrations for American Gods has been a journey through art history, blending mythology and modernity. Inspired by artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Arnold Böcklin, Edward Robert Hughes, Gustave Doré, Grant Wood, Edward Hopper, Zdzisław Beksiński, Alfons Mucha, Vincent Van Gogh, and Ferdinand Keller, I sought to explore a wide range of styles to reflect the richness and diversity of the stories and legends.

We are planning to release a series of art prints enhanced with gold in the coming weeks, continuing the work done with my previous editions.

If you’re interested in the detailed creative process, I’ve published two in-depth articles on Patreon. The most recent one focuses specifically on the creation of this illustration and the steps involved in its development.

Finally, regarding the allegations against Neil Gaiman, I’ve firmly expressed my stance in a previous post and elaborated on my thoughts in an article freely accessible on Patreon.

Thank you for your support and feedback.

In the intimacy of my studio, the final touches of gold came to life on the frontispiece of American Gods ⭐️

A unique piece created for the deluxe edition published by Suntup Editions. An artwork in which I concealed a multitude of details...

I crafted the shelves about twelve years ago using raw yew branches and century-old oak planks that I found in the attic of the outbuildings of the abbey where I lived at the time. I've kept them and taken them with me everywhere ever since.

The prints of “Le Printemps”  are now available in my webshop ! :) I hope you like them.  Limited A3 edition of 30 copies, signed and numbered.  High quality prints on Hahnemuehle Fine Art Baryta paper, 325gsm, with satin finish and deep blacks.  This tribute series to Alfons Mucha has been very important to me because he is a great artist who has influenced my vision of Art. It took a lot of work to make an image, that seems to me harmonious with my goal. Vade Retro discouragement ;)

Spring again!

I created this artwork, 'The Gathering – Time', in 2015, using oil and gold leaf on a wooden panel. It is the second part of a diptych, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic.

The diptych tells the story of a meeting between a nymph and a faun.

I am very attached to this artwork, as it foretold my meeting with my companion Psyché, whom I met a few months later, almost 10 years ago.

⭐️ American Gods Frontispiece – Work in Progress 1: "Shadow"

A glimpse into the creation process, where gold and graphite bring the story to life.

Soon, I will share with you the illustrations I created for American Gods. This work, the result of four years of research and artistic effort, reflects my vision of this rich and complex universe.

However, this project is overshadowed by the serious allegations made against Neil Gaiman. I had great respect for him, both for his work and his commitments. His position as a defender of victims of sexual violence and his support for these causes earned him particular respect. It is therefore all the more difficult for me to reconcile this admiration with the testimonies that have emerged about him.

I intend to share these illustrations with you, as they are the result of my own artistic work. This project, which blends contemporary America with the myths that shape it, inspired me to create a true visual journey through the history of fantastic art. I wanted to pay tribute to the legacy of tales, legends, and folklore while traversing the history of fantastic painting, reaching all the way to the works that have shaped American culture more recently.

I have explored various styles, evoked different emotions, and used a variety of techniques to create a diverse range of representations. Among my illustrations, you will find references and tributes to great names in art, such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Arnold Böcklin, Edward Robert Hughes, Gustave Doré, Grant Wood, Edward Hopper, Zdzisław Beksiński, Alfons Mucha, Vincent Van Gogh, and Ferdinand Keller.

This project, which is as much a journey through the history of fantastic art as it is a journey into contemporary myths, represents my personal visual interpretation of American Gods, while remaining deeply rooted in my own values as an artist.

Finally, both American Gods and the current situation remind us of the importance of questioning our relationships with idols and heroes. This lesson is more relevant than ever.

"Thanatos," a piece I created in 2013. This one was exhibited in Thomas Negovan's awesome Century Guild gallery that same year, surrounded by the work of the incredible Dave McKean, Clive Barker, Jeremy Bastian, Forest Rogers, David Mack, Steve Kilbey, Chris Mars, Gail Potocki, Christopher Ulrich, Matthew Bone, as well as vintage reproductions of Klimt and Alfons Mucha. The silkscreen poster was created for the occasion by Malleus - Rock art Lab, and it was just like the show, amazing!

Here is the Arts & Crafts version, entirely handcrafted, of my art book Forgotten Gods.

We printed it with @psycheophiuchus , using our own presses on Vélin d'Arches paper. Each design in the book was then screen-printed by hand with gold and colored inks, with up to five different screen-printing passes depending on the complexity of the pages.

Once the sheets were folded and gathered into signatures, Sophie Charlot, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, meticulously bound them by hand. Belfea Archerie created all the leather parts and applied the dyes. Together, we assembled the covers on the book bodies bound by Sophie, and I gilded the cover with gold leaf (using three different shades of 22-23k gold).

Finally, I made the wooden cases and covered them with fabric. We then attached the clasp and the repoussé leather medallion, dyed by Belfea and gilded by me.

All the illustrations were printed using our presses; they are fine art prints on velvet-finish paper. With Psyché, we enhanced about thirty of them with gold (using several shades of 22-23k gold) to match the appearance of the original artworks. These illustrations were then hand-glued and protected with tracing paper, also hand-glued by Psyché and me.

King of Gods has represented a significant part of my work in recent years. It has been a passionate and enriching adventure, in the true spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement and in the footsteps of the Kelmscott Press. Thank you to everyone who worked on this book.

The enhanced print of “Les Chants de L'Aurore”, co-signed by Neige and Yoann lossel, is now available! These Collector's prints will be unique, They will be numbered according to the number of prints ordered and will never be produced again // Limited-Time Release - June 11 until June 21.

https://www.yoannlossel.com/les-chants-de-laurore "I had the pleasure of painting the cover of Alcest's latest album, Les Chants de L'Aurore, as well as directing the music video for L'Envol. To celebrate the release of this new album on June 21, we're offering this fine art print enhanced with 22k "Latin" gold leaf, signed by Neige and myself. Each print is made in my workshop using the finest materials. It is first screen-printed by hand to delimit the areas that receive the gilding, then gilded by hand with gold leaf, embossed with an engraving press, stamped by hand, numbered and signed by hand. The cover of “Les Chants de L'Aurore” is a tribute to the magnificent Art Nouveau painting “The Spirit of the Plains” by Australian painter Sydney Long."

[ENG] ☀️ Meet Etienne, the hero of the music video "L'Envol," created for the band Alcest! We crafted this puppet, halfway between a heron and a crane, in order to study its movements and create the animation for the video. It is fully articulated and can move each of its parts, spread its wings, move its legs, or open its beak. It required three people to operate it, along with our partner Cédric Lenfant, to ensure that each part moved independently.

I took great care in studying the anatomy and osteology of wading birds to make its movements as realistic as possible. I learned a lot about birds thanks to Etienne, and he was a fantastic performer!
