discord servers replacing forums and similar niche communities primarily sucks for being a black hole of information but a close second is that it discourages lurking. maybe i want to anonymously observe a community to see what people are like and if i would fit in before i start interacting! maybe i don't want to immediately jump in to a spammed chorus of animated greeting stickers on an account tied to several other elements of my online identity! let me lurk!!!

i’ve been told by various european friends that the most american sentence i’ve ever said is “sophomore year of college, some friends and i road-tripped thirteen hours to florida for spring break.”

and now i can confidently say this is the most guy-who-lives-in-paris sentence i’ve ever said: “today i was cycling to meet a friend at buttes-chaumont and i went over some cobblestones and my baguette got launched out of the bike basket into the middle of the roundabout”

@derinthescarletpescatarian I need an Australian sentence now.

Once I was on an eighteen hour train ride into the city and the complementary tea service was down because the train had hit a kangaroo on the way up and broken their hot water system.

Jesus christ Derin that really is the most australian sentence ever uttered

Imagine my emotions when they made the announcement. I was like "oh this is actually real huh".

i see why many people think that haymitch is most like katniss, but i actually think that at least prior to his “victory” he’s much more like peeta.

katniss is a reluctant revolutionary, she goes into the games to try and survive for prim and nothing else. peeta goes into the games with the same mindset haymitch does, knowing that he’s going to die, but still aiming to show that they down own him, that he’s more than piece in their games. peeta has a revolutionary spirit, while katniss has a practical one, she “can’t afford to think like that.”

haymitch is also exceedingly kind. he takes ampert seriously and doesn’t look down on him for his age. he takes in the the district 6 doves under his arm, protects lou lou in the arena, and is even compassionate to silka.

even his roguish behavior is similar to peeta. this is the “if it wasn’t for the baby” line is sooo rascally, his boyish charm and sarcasm during the interviews was so similar to what we saw from haymitch

Extremely Important Update: in April 2023 the World Bird Sanctuary had an orphaned eagle chick in need of care, so they decided to see if Murphy could live up to his parental ambitions.

He successfully raised the chick, which is now thriving with the other juvenile eaglets!

Congrats Murphy, you made it happen through sheer determination.

(Pictures are from the Facebook page of the World Bird Sanctuary; I can’t link them directly because I don’t have a FB account and the site is a nightmare to interact with if you’re not logged in, constantly resetting and kicking you to registration pages.)
