Non-Deity Practices!

โ”€โ”€โ”€ โ‹†โ‹…โ˜†โ‹…โ‹† โ”€โ”€

The Gods are obviously the more talked about part of polytheist circles, but there are some other things that you can include in your practice. This is by no means a comprehensive list of everything you can do, or even the only definition of these things. Just some ideas for expanding your practice.

โ”€โ”€โ”€ โ‹†โ‹…โ˜†โ‹…โ‹† โ”€โ”€

Ancestor Veneration

-Leave offerings for those who came before you! Pay your respects and ask for their wisdom. For my practice, I sometimes make a cup of coffee for my late grandmother! Something simple but meaningful to her.

Hero Worship

-This is more akin to veneration than worship for many people. It's similar to ancestor veneration but for individuals in history and mythology that are considered important to one's religious beliefs. (Kind of a fast and loose definition since there's a lot of variety in this type of worship).

Hospitality

-More up to interpretation, but some pagan religions put emphasis on being hospitable and also involved in your community. For me, this means volunteer work, helping my neighbors, and being welcoming in my home.

Local Flora and Fauna

-Research your home! Learn the animals, the weather, when the flowers bloom. Involve yourself with your natural world. This is especially useful if you want to base your calendar or offerings/Rituals around the seasons and such.

Local Spirits

-Deities get a lot of attention, but don't leave out the spirits of the land and your home. Leave out a bite of your snack or a glass of water. (If leaving stuff outside, make sure it won't hurt any animals that get into it).

๐Ÿ’ซwitch tip๐Ÿ’ซ

because i once again forgot to add this to my list post, but have something that breaks up the stagnant energy in your rooms. like an analog clock cuz it's hands are always moving. or a lava lamp, or wind chimes.

something to keep energy moving in the room instead of letting it settle and build up

or you can be the movement. nowadays a lot of people are prone to doomscrolling. i personally believe that's a form of stagnant energy or gathering stagnant energy. i hold your hand when i say this (because im not immune to it either) but get up and interact with your space, acknowledge your space, appreciate your space, show some love to the items that surround you because they're there and pixels aren't tangible.

Prayer to Nature

Goddess of Earth and Life, hear me on this day. Goddess of Rot and Death, come to me this day.

You who sits beside young fawns, You who guides the hungry wolf's maw, You who stains the fox's fur red, You who lay the salmon at the river's bed.

You who turn yellow petals to the sky, You who makes the bluebells sigh, You who carves thorns upon the stem, You who lays lilies on the condemned.

I honour you on this day, With greatest love, my respects I pay. Accept my worship and gratitude, From I who honour you in solitude.

i ask of you to continue my lessons, I ask of you to forgive mistaken transgressions. I thank you for all you have done, I am grateful our journey has only begun.

Praise Nature; our mother and maker, Hear my worship, hear my prayer. Praise Nature; our guardian and ancestor, Hear my worship, hear my prayer. Let my words sink into the soil, Where they will begin to rot and spoil. As this prayer decays, let the words fulfill you. May they grow and bloom, may roots stretch through. So may it be, each word binds us more.

ok so, i had a phase where i was really interested in modern witchcraft, neopaganism, and wicca, so i know modern witches donโ€™t really do all that weird evil shit that everyone thinks they do, but, like, do any of yโ€™all actually curse people?? because someone really should curse elon muskโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..

1) I'm a witch in modern times. I do baneful magic. (Curses fall under that.)

2) Cursing/baneful magic is not inherently evil. I think that's a black and white/all or nothing way of thinking about it.

) I honestly thought this same thing, and a witch who knows her way around the cauldron quite a bit more than me explained that it's a bit more complicated than just placing a curse. (I was shocked by this too until they explained it more to me.)

thank you!!

Hello!!!!!!

While going through my witchcraft journey I notice that there are a lot of holidays, celebrations, and other sort of events that witches partake in.

My question is are there any specific ones that I should be aware of in terms of Norse Paganism?

Holidays historically varied depending on location.ย  Typically these holidays relate to concepts of growth, gratitude, and reflection. There is not one set list of holidays which all heathens celebrate, but there do tend to be commonalities:

  • Holidays that take place in spring will tend to honor gods who represent youth, new beginnings, and hope.ย
  • Holidays in summer tend to celebrate growth, hard work, and fertility.ย
  • Holidays in the autumn are typically opportunities to celebrate the accomplishments weโ€™ve made throughout the year as well as to prepare for the darker, colder times ahead.ย
  • Holidays in the winter tend to relate to reflection and thinking about things we can shed or invite as the new year begins.

Holidays can be celebrated individually or as part of a group! Thereโ€™s definitely something special about celebrating as a group because you can incorporate symbels/toasts, but having a private celebration between you and your gods can also be incredibly meaningful of course.

I hope that was helpful! Iโ€™m sure everybody has different experiences, nuances, views, etc. so itโ€™d be great to hear from other folks x0x

Fellow pagans. Remember that the pagan experience is not purely an ex Christian experience. That experience is worth talking about, but please don't talk about the pagan experience as if leaving Christianity is universal to being neopagan.

Ex atheist pagans deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

Ex Muslim pagans deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

Non practicing Jewish pagans deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

Pagans who have been pagan for most or all of their life deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

A lot of online pagan/polytheistic communities act batshit with constant infighting, drama, and weird rules they pull out of their ass because - and i am saying this as someone who has BEEN in these communities since the LIVEJOURNAL days - a LOT of the community is made up by kids coming from fandom spaces and bringing this weird fandom discourse mindset with them. They treat religions like fandoms and gods like their blorbos

Hi! So I have more questions!!

I am trying to understand altars and how to properly work with them.

As I go about learning Norse Paganism and how that affects my Altar I ended up choosing Odin and Freyja for my idols

This was before I learned about the Nazis that have ties with Odin.

I would hate to have a Diety who can be considered Problematic on my altar due to the connotations it has with Nazis.

However I know Odin is a part of Norse Paganism, Is it bad to have Odin on my Altar? How does an Altar function? Would having Odin on my Altar be problematic or am I okay? I am much more interested in trying to communicate with Njord does having Freyja and Odin affect that?

Are there ways of practicing Paganism with Odin that doesn't deal with White Supremacists and Nazis.

I want to be open and inclusive both on this blog and in my practice considering my own LGBTQIA+ Identity and any help and guidance would be much appreciated.
