happy autism acceptance month. this month, regardless if you're abled or disabled, allistic or autistic, try to consider if you really do accept people with autism. all aspects of autism. people who:

  • without volume control
  • talk to themselves or make sounds (seemingly) at random
  • have huge screaming meltdowns
  • stim any way, including smearing body fluids
  • only talk about one subject and will never "move on"
  • stare inappropriately
  • struggle with personal hygiene
  • are unemployed
  • who left education early ("dropped out")
  • has a carer and will always need one
  • don't use mouth words to communicate
  • have comorbid intellectual disability and don't want to separate that from their autism

autism acceptance month can't truly be about acceptance if we don't broaden our understanding of autism and confront our internal biases. these things listen above are normal parts of autism. sometimes very common. there's stigma around them, but that's stigma we can actively fight.

Since autism acceptance month is coming up in April (I know I’m very early), shout out to all autistics and disabled people in general who:

  • Can’t get out of bed, leave the house, feed themselves, use the toilet, or perform other ADLs without assistance. I see you and you are not gross or weird or lazy or broken. You deserve a good caretaker.
  • Cannot communicate in any way. Like even AAC doesn’t work for you effectively, so someone else might have to speak on your behalf.
  • Can’t hold down a job, stay in school, or live independently.
  • Isn’t a savant, isn’t skilled with their special interests, or can’t do anything without immediate access to their special interests.
  • Has an intellectual or learning disability.
  • Has level 2 or level 3 autism that can’t be masked away so that you’re pretty much visibly autistic.
  • Has disturbing intrusive thoughts. They don’t define who you are, your actions do. You’re not a bad person for having intrusive thoughts; you can’t control them.
  • Experience delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, or any other psychotic traits. You’re not crazy or scary, and you’re welcome into this space.
  • Dissociate, have amnesia from trauma, have gaps in your memory, have an identity or personality disorder, etc.

You’re worth it, hun. 🫶🏻

What people online think autism regression is: I unmasked and now appear more autistic!

What autism regression actually is:

  • Fear
  • Losing skills you may have just gained
  • Losing control of yourself
  • Depression
  • Losing hopes and dreams for the future
  • Loss of communication
  • Loss of usable coping mechanisms
  • Feeling like your brain has changed completely and struggling to adjust
  • Self-blame
  • Confusion from those around you
  • More meltdowns
  • Feeling guilty for needing more support and care
  • Isolation
  • Feeling unprepared for the future you never planned for
  • Having to deal with decisions you made when you thought you were never going to get worse, that you can’t deal with anymore (pets, home, job, school)
  • Increased abuse and neglect

Made this to put on my AAC tablet!!!

[ID: Both photos are a piece of paper in a ID holder.

Image 1: The front which says “Parker T. (redacted last name)” colored in green colored pencil. “Semiverbal Autistic.” Not colored in. “I use this device to help me speak when it is difficult to do so verbally,” colored in brown and outlined in green. “I also use this to manage and organize my life.” Not colored in. Finally, at the bottom is an emergency contact colored in red.

Image 2: The back that says “Keep it charged! Keep it with me! Keep it out and ready to go!” All outlined in orange. Underlined in red is “communication is a human right. I can comprehend things. Assume competency.”

hello world!!!

I want to talk to you about swallowing (not in a sexual light)

swallowing is supposed to be:

  • efortless
  • automatic
  • painless

and should happen without conscious thought

choking is supposed to be infrequent

if that does not sound like your swallowing experience you are probably part of the 5-15% of the population that has dysphagia. if your swallowing is bothering you then you can (and should) bring up your concerns to a doctor

swallowing is not supposed to be difficult!

Hi I am an AAC user and I want to say it is ok to use AAC whether or not you are nonspeaking or nonverbal. You don't have to be “Disabled enough" to use AAC.

You can use AAC if you are semiverbal.

You can use AAC if you are speaking but struggle with verbal shutdowns.

You can use AAC if you want to try it.

You can use AAC if you have voice dysphoria.

You can use AAC if you are too tired to speak.

You can use AAC if you think it will help you for any reason.

You can use AAC just because you want to.

AAC is for anyone who wants to use it! And any type of AAC is ok to use too. You don't have to limit how you communicate. Your needs are enough to be accommodated, I promise.

hey, if you’re a speaking person (or partially speaking due to speech loss episodes or what have you) and you hear another speaking person say shit like “going nonverbal” or “i’m semiverbal bc i go nonverbal sometimes”

stop that shit. program a button into your aac or keep a card in your communication cards or prepare a verbal script to inform others.

a bit lost as to what to say? try this one out for size:

“actually, nonverbal is a permanent state of not talking. it means you don’t talk ever, you don’t “go nonverbal”. some words to describe your experience could be, losing speech, speech loss episode, losing words, verbal shutdown…”

the nonverbal community does not need to do this on their own. we owe them that much.

spread the word like butter on toast yall! call out that shit when you see it.

Programmed this phrase into my AAC :3 recommend you should too >_0

Whenever I struggled to get people to like me, people always told me "just be yourself".

And I could never figure out why that advice was useless for me.

I now look back on my childhood and realize that there wasn't a single time when I was even allowed to be myself, or be anything close to myself, or figure out what being myself means.

Just a reminder that you:

  • Can still be Level 2 / Medium/Moderate support needs and still hit your early developmental milestones!
  • You're still Lvl 2/ MSN even without a intellectual disability!
  • You're still Level 2/ MSN even if you were diagnosed late!

Autism is a spectrum and even people on the Same Level / Support needs can be different!

Me with my machine in public to make you less scared of using yours!!

— At the mall

— Still at the mall, got food!

Image descriptions in alt text!

I didn't take a lot of photos, but I also used it in build-a-bear!! The staff were incredibly nice and treated me as if I was mouthspeaking!

I definitely recommend going to build-a-bear to practice with AAC
