Deliciously Nerdy Fun

@zoreta / zoreta.tumblr.com

I'm a 30+ engineering grad student, she/her/hers. Here you'll find a mix of fandoms- mostly nostalgic. Also expect anything and everything that tickles my fancy, queer theory and other social issues discussion, and a heaping helping of SCIENCE!

There are a lot of people in the notes saying, basically, "Yeah, that's polyester for ya!"

but, the thing is

even polyester fabric was higher quality in the past

yes, not all of it, but, still, a noticeable amount of older polyester was...nicer.

yeah, it would still get picks and hold on to every bit of underarm odor, and that's on top of no-one knowing about microplastic shedding

but a 1950s Wash'n'Wear shirt, or 1970s double knit pantsuit, or 1980s neon sweatshirt, or a 1990s slinky knit or crushed velour mock turtleneck...so many of them would have been significantly higher quality than the fast fashion of today.

This little one acts completely feral unless you make the "mommy greeting kittens" noise at them. When my phone isn't making them unsure they will come charging to the front of the cage for attention by the second trill.

You can see the body language change in the ears with the first and second trill real well

this is killing me. op please teach me your ways

Last night – Tuesday night – Gamers Nexus posted a three hour deep dive on how Trump’s tariff regime is completely fucking one segment of the computer industry: custom computers and components including gaming PCs.

I have now watched all of it.

IT IS WORTH YOUR TIME.

I never say that shit about a video this long but it is a documentary of goddamn note. I haven’t seen anything else close to this, showing not just numbers, but how those numbers compound – 145% isn’t a limit, some of the tariffs are additive on top of each other – and most of all how stupidly complicated they’ve made it.

Let’s say you’ve got a power supply. Let’s say it’s at 145% as a base unit, ’cause right now it probably is. That’s not the only tariff – that’s just one of them. Percentage aluminium by weight? You’ve got to figure that out, and you need to know where it came from, because that’s an additional tariff. Sometimes. Percentage steel by weight? Same question, same fluctuating situation.

How the fuck do you figure out where the aluminium legs on a resistor came from?

The transparency from Hyte in particular – it’s stunning. They’re just dumping pricing and strategy trade secrets in this video because they literally can’t do business in the US as things stood at time of shooting. They’ve cancelled all shipments to the US and once they’re out of stock already in country, they’re out of stock.

As they say, most people won’t really notice until shelves go empty.

And this is just one industry.

$600 for a PC case, anyone?

thinking about edvard munch's "The Sun" (1911)

like yeah thats how it feels. thats what it feels like to exist sometimes. he gets it

Also very big! Takes up two stories!

Hey just a general PSA from someone officially diagnosed and documented:

Now is not the time to seek out an autism diagnosis.

RFK's plans have been made very clear and any diagnosis you do get will get you put on this "national disease registry" they're proposing.

Trust me when I say I completely understand the need for accommodations and a better understanding of yourself, but if you have gone this long without being diagnosed, you will be better off waiting.

Furthermore, listen to and advocate for folks who are diagnosed, especially folks with higher support needs. They'll be the first ones targeted for whatever bullshit "experimental treatments" the government tries to push.

Stay safe and look out for your neighbor.

love that the scifi/fantasy trope of ridiculously adorable creature that’s actually a super dangerous predator is a real thing that exists in this world and it’s the desert sandcat

it’s one of the most brutally efficient predators on earth and it looks like it should be dressed up in a frilly little dress at a children’s tea party

I’ve been taking part is a lot of nude drawing sessions as part of a class and i genuinely think everyone is the world should at least sit in on a nude drawing sesh at some point and then maybe we’d all be more normal about casual nudity. Americans in particular are super weird about nudity and are incapable of interacting with it in a mature manner and that shit just doesn’t fly in an environment like a nude drawing class because if you act like a fool you will be removed for being a distraction. it’s a very sobering and in my opinion very calming environment where we’re all covered in charcoal admiring the myriad shapes of the human body. I feel a little rewired by the experience to where i can look at nude people and not feel any malignant shame or embarrassment like how my American upbringing taught me to feel, which I think younger queer people especially need. All bodies are art and no bodies deserve to be hidden away or censored.

nude beaches, saunas, locker rooms, nude drawing classes... all of these spaces are such massive dysphoria-busters too. whatever part of your body you're super dramatic in your head about is just another mundane feature that a lot of people have. even things that are statistically rarer like large textured scars, missing or amputated limbs, mobility differences, disfigurements, whatever, they're just a part of who a person is that is not a big deal.
