I think I qualify as a fanatic. I’ve seen 51 of Dirk’s films, including 28 of the 31 you have listed. There are also a few that I’ve started watching, but shelved to finish later. Sir Dirk achieved the seemingly impossible in A Tale of Two Cities … he made me like Dickens for the first time (and the last). I watch Campbell’s Kingdom every time I need a hug. I don’t know why that film appeals to me so much, but suspect it has something to do with Michael Craig. Hunted almost qualifies as the perfect film, with writing, cinematography and performances very hard to criticise. It’s hard to believe that it’s 60 years since Victim was released … its message is still relevant. I would love to show it to the surprisingly high number of teenagers who use words like ‘gay’ and ‘queer’ as insults (I taught for 35 years). Was James Robertson Justice his most frequent co-star? They bounce off each other so well.

I saw 2 including top 1. a bridge too far a 9 . the night porter I saw on the big screen. it was probably the first legal r rated movie I bought a ticket for after turning 18. a brilliantly performed horrific tale of sex in the holocaust. in previous efforts to watch r rated movies I used a fake id.

Hey bob cox….I have only seen 4 myself. Bob is the Bogarde expert here. I have actually seen both of the ones you have seen. I love A Bridge Too Far…and I liked The Night Porter….which is a strange movie…but very memorable. Funny that you used your fake id to get into movies..I used one to get beer in my wilder days. I also just noticed this page on Dirk Bogarde, another Sir, after commenting on the Sir Richard Attenborough, who ironically directed Bogarde in his highest grossing film, A Bridge Too Far. I have seen 11 of his films, including 4 that are not on this list. It helps that YouTube has many of these old British movies available for free. Notably, I saw Victim a few months ago, where Bogarde gives an excellent performance as a gay attorney. A very daring film for 1961, particularly in its “relatively” sympathetic treatment of homosexuality. Bogarde was maybe at his best playing rather unsympathetic or sly characters. His role as The Servant where he gradually starts to dominate his master played by James Fox is particularly memorable. Dirk Bogarde was certainly one of biggest British stars of the classic era and was quite well known internationally, even though he never became a big name on the US.

I will have to check out those Bogarde You Tube videos. I know one of the comments here, posted a link to one of his early British movies. It sounds like Victim was well ahead of its time. The Servant is not one of the Bogarde movies that I have seen….but it sounds interesting. Good stuff as always.

Hey Flora…..as I just told Bob in another comment, I was working on this one a few weeks ago and accidentaly hit publish versus save. At that point I had to either delete the whole page and start over or quietly put the page out there….but quietly continue to work on the page.
