Elvis Presley (1935-1977) the singer was the “King of Rock and Roll”. The “King” has sold over 2.5 billion in worldwide records. Following in the footsteps of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, Presley went from singing to acting in movies. Elvis Presley’s first number one song, Heartbreak Hotel, was released in January 1956. By the end of 1957 he had appeared in three movies (Love Me Tender, Loving You, and Jailhouse Rock) and they were all box office hits. After Presley finished filming King Creole he was drafted. He would return to movies with G.I. Blues in 1960. For the rest of the 1960s he averaged nearly three movies a year.

All Elvis fans understood that once we get to ” Girls Girls Girls ” or thereabouts, Elvis’ motivation and excitement to do these movies was fading fast. They became a paycheck. Considering the level of frustration he had, he did a great job. Also, the more we learn about Col Parker the more we resent him.
Not so much for the gambling or denying Elvis international tours ( illegal aliens ) or taking 50% , etc. but blocking Elvis’ chance at ” A Star Is Born ” with Striesand gets me most angry. I realize there’s no guarantee of the outcome if he’d done it but I’d bet he would have gotten in shape, refocused himself creatively, less bad habits and it may have shot him sky high. The offers from there on may have reinvented him. August 16 May have never happened…
The project “a star is born” which Elvis received (directed by Streisand’s hairdresser) was an Hollywood joke at that time, very far from the final movie.
While Elvis never achieved what he might have with better scripts, his 50’s-60’s box office appeal was undeniable. Some metrics ranked him as a top ten BO actor through 1967. Flaming Star, King Creole, Kid Galahad, Jailhouse Rock and The Trouble With Girls were among his best. Elvis On Tour was a solid documentary and when working with a decent director (Scorsese, Curtiz) he was quite good. It’s difficult to comprehend, but for 15 of his 25 years as a professional entertainer (1952-1977), Elvis was primarily a movie star.
