1. Harold Rowe Holbrook Jr., was born on February 17, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio. His mother was a a vaudeville dancer.

2. Ed Sullivan saw him and gave Hal Holbrook his first national exposure on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 12, 1956.  He got Sullivan’s attention for his performance in Mark Twain, Tonight!  He would play Twain for the rest of his life which included over 2,000 performances.

3. The Hal Holbrook Theatre is located in the Dixie Performing Arts Center in Huntingdon, Tennessee. The Dixie was named in honor of his wife, Dixie Carter, who was from McLemoresville, a nearby town in northwest Tennessee.

4. Hal Holbrook received his only Oscar® nomination at the age of 82.  At the time that was the record for oldest person to receive a nomination.  That record was beaten when Christopher Plummer at the age of 88 got a Best Supporting Oscar® nomination for 2017’s All The Money In The World.

5. Hal Holbrook had appeared in three films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar®: All the President’s Men (1976), Julia (1977), and Lincoln (2012).
