So with Jason Bourne hitting cinemas….that now means there have been 5 Die Hard movies and 5 Bourne movies. Which seems to be a perfect time to compare these highly successful franchises in a John McClane vs Jason Bourne head to head matchup.
So in this corner we have Detective John McClane. John McClane made his first screen appearance in 1988’s Die Hard. The success of Die Hard turned Bruce Willis into a superstar. Die Hard is considered by many to be the best action film of all-time…as well as being one of the best Christmas movies of all-time. When looking at adjusted worldwide box office…the 5 Die Hard movies have grossed over $2.26 Billion. John McClane might be back in theaters in 2017. He is either going to Japan or he will get his own origin story…..details are a little sketchy.
In this corner we have Jason Bourne. Jason Bourne is a super spy created by author Robert Ludlum. Jason Bourne made his first screen appearance in 2002’s The Bourne Identity. The Bourne movies were Matt Damon’s first stand alone box office hits. After a nearly 10 year absence he returns to the Bourne universe in this summer’s Jason Bourne. When looking at adjusted worldwide box office…the 5 Bourne movies have grossed over $2.13 Billion.
There are two tables of information here. The first table looks at the 10 McClane/Bourne movies. Movies are ranked in 6 different categories. The second table compares the McClane and Bourne in a head to head matchup….to determine who is better statistically.

Nice site!!!!
Thank you WoC
Fun page.
Thanks Trenton….glad you like this page.
Bourne would destroy old man McClaine.
Hey Candice…I don’t know…Bourne has age on his side….but McClane has been pretty lethal…lol.
Give me McClane any day. Maybe I should say give me McClane in from 1988 to 1995. I thought the last two were terrible.
Hey Helakoski….I agree give me McClane as well. I liked part 4 as it had humor…but I agree part 5 was a franchise killer. Thanks for stopping by.
Interesting comparison. Surprised to see the Bourne series is almost as successful as the Die Hard movies. You’re predicting Jason Bourne will be the most popular in that series grossing $600m worldwide. Isn’t that a little high? But than Mission Impossible 5 went on to gross nearly $700m so anything’s possible.
How does the Mission Impossible series compare to Bourne and Die Hard?
I enjoyed the first 3 Bourne movies but none of them are in the same league as Die Hard (1988). The last Die Hard was weak though and Willis is making direct to video movies now.
Might go and see the new Bourne next week, I hope there’s less shakycam than usual.
Nice work Bruce. Voted Up!
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for checking out this little comparison.
2. The experts are predicting a huge worldwide box office….though the predicted a dropoff in North America.
3. Early reviews and word of mouth might be deadly….seems how they were bragging that Damon only had 25 lines in the movie is backfiring on them….as yes we love action….but a plot helps that out…and if the main star is barely talking it seems the plot might be light at best.
4. Mission Impossible is right there with these franchises….probably even higher.
5. The last Die Hard was beyond weak….still upset how bad that movie was….poor Bruce is now stuck in direct to video hell…but at least Nicolas Cage is there to keep him company.
6. If you see Jason Bourne…hope you enjoy it…as for me….I will be happy to wait for it.
