Superproperty of P108 (employer)?

[edit]

It seems intuitively clear that a special case of "affiliation" is that a person is employed at the organisation. I have now added the according subproperty of (P1647) statement to employer (P108). However, the constraints used on the two properties are not fully compatible, e.g., employer (P108) allows fictional character (Q95074) to have an employer. It seems that this would also make sense for affiliation (P1416). Some alignment would be necessary. --Markus Krötzsch (talk) 09:52, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think that is usually the case, e.g., a person may be affiliated with a particular research group, while not employed by the research group. The employment is usually at the university level. Furthermore a journalist can - in my opinion - be affiliated with a particular newspaper, but employed by the company that publishes the newspaper. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 16:05, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Affiliation of an Organisation

[edit]

What is the equivalent property to use in organizations ?. Organizations also can be affiliated to another organisation without jerarquical dependecency or property. For instance, television network can be affiliated to another one (see: this example). Thanks, --Amadalvarez (talk) 19:59, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Autoanswer: I saw that member of (P463) were limited to a person too but, after discussion, now is available for organitzations and countries. So, I'll take this one. However, I wonder whats the difference between member of (P463) and affiliation (P1416). --Amadalvarez (talk) 21:39, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Amadalvarez: Added organization (Q43229) to constraints and removed the constraint that values also have sex or gender (P21). Runner1928 (talk) 18:55, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Specific version of part of (P361)?

How true is this? d1g (talk) 04:18, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Universities

[edit]

What property should be used for universities:

  1. Johannes Kepler (Q8963), employer (P108): Universität Graz or
  2. Henry Laurens (Q24581082), affiliation (P1416): Tulane University

Differences

[edit]

What are the differences between affiliation (P1416) and member of (P463)? --Davidpar (talk) 11:07, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

+1 Would be interested in an answer too. --Nw520 (talk) 19:48, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
+1 For a given faculty member, the employer is the university. For the department that they are in, is the correct property "part of", "member of", or "affiliation"? --UWashPrincipalCataloger 20:48, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
+1 I also like to know the differences between "affiliation" (P1416) and "member of" (P463). --Neo-Jay (talk) 12:03, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I use employer for an faculty member that is employed by a university. I think the employer property should be used in a human-legal entity relation. Affiliation I use if the faculty member is associated with a particular department or research group. "member of" I would use if the person has joined an organisation often paying membership fee, e.g., Association for Computational Linguistics (Q4346375). For a journalist that is employed by a company and works for a particular newpaper associated with the company, I would use affiliation. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 15:55, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore, if a person is a visitor at a university, I would use affiliation property. Also if a person has an unknown relationship with a university (e.g., a paper states that a person is from a particular organization), I would use the affiliation property until the relationship is clarified, e.g., it is possible that the affiliation is as a student or as a visitor. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 15:59, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For example, in case of organizations, there's Internet Society (Q749257). It has organization members such as Ericsson (Q52618), and it also has other related organizations such as Internet Society France (Q3153519) that are neither members nor subsidiaries. Linking the latter using affiliation (P1416) would seem appropriate. 2001:7D0:81DA:F780:3C42:73DE:A25D:2F6C 13:52, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong direction used

[edit]

Looking at https://scholia.toolforge.org/P1416 I see that organization items are using this property. For instance, Missouri Democratic Party (Q15980745). Using Democratic Party (Q29552) as a value seems perhaps ok, but using with, e.g., Adair County Missouri Democrats (Q99732569) as a value is in the wrong direction as far as I understand. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 16:10, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

P1416 and P108

[edit]

FYI I'm currently raising some doubts regarding the current utilization of affiliation (P1416) and employer (P108) (along with other related properties) in the discussion here. I appreciate any feedback in advance. Alexmar983 (talk) 16:18, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
